Question about Moen & Posi-Temp Single Handle Shower Or Tub Valve

1 Answer

Leaky posi temp shower valve

I have a Villeta shower valve with the Moen posi temp valve that I cannot get to stop dripping. I've changed the cartrige and it still continues to drip. The problem is that sometimes I can get the valve centered just right to stop the dripping, but soon (generally at night) it will be leaking again. Please let me know what I can do to fix this problem. Thank you!

We had a Moen Posi temp valve installed in mid Dec 2008 as part of a bathroom remodel.  We heard it dripping also but then thought, since the interior of the shower was not wet, that it was snow melting outside the window.  After a month we discovered it was the actual brass valved dripping.  It turns out it had a crack along the threads on the cold side.  It has not been simple to get that thing out of the wall and replaced, not to mention the damage in the new wall.  You might want to take off the escutcheon and handle and have a good long look inside your wall.  We could only see the crack when my husband turned the water off and then on again at the shut off handles.  Then the crack would emit a fine spray of water.

Coming from the uk it sounds that when you mention it leaks at night its a possibility thats when the water pressure increases & the valve starts to drip?

i know its not a solution but it may help you understand why its dripping at night.

Also the seals might be damaged in which case thats why its dripping check them for damage. make sure when you put the new cartridge in that you put some silicone grease around the seals as this helps the insertion & helps protect the seals from damage.

Kindly

Richie

Low hot water pressure on Moen Single-Handle Shower Only posi-temp shower control. Cold water pressure is fine. Hot water pressure elsewhere in house is ok. Cold it be the cartrige -- lime buidlup, etc.?

I think you are on the right track. The first thing I would do is change the cartridge. While you have the valve apart examine the inlet ports as good as you can to see if there is any mineral buildup. You can use a short length of a small gauge mallable wire to run into water ports to se if you can break anything loose. Another thing you can do is to turn supply stop on slightly while you have the valve disassembled to wash any particles out. Hope this helps you and thanks.

I'm not aware of any problems with non moen replacement parts being the cause for a water hammer problem. Start with the simplest and cheapest correction which is using a moen replacement cartridge. If the water hammer persists then you may have to install a water hammer arrester in the plumbing system. This is basically a shock absorber in the plumbing system to stop the effect of water hammer. An arrester will cost you around $10 to $15 at your local plumbing supply shop. If you are not comfortable soldering copper then you will want to hire a licensed plumber to complete the work for you.

I had the same type of problem with an older toilet in my house. It developed a water hammer when it shut off after filling the tank. I replaced the fill valve with a generic universal replacement for about $10 and it stopped. Again sometimes the simplest fix will work. Let me know how it works out.

My Moen Posi-Temp tub valve runs only very cold or very hot. whats wrong?

Your Moen valve is equiped with an anti-scald device (as part of the valve cartridge) which prevents someone from getting scalded by hot water if there's a sudden demand for cold water, i.e. a toilet flush, washing machine filling, etc. Fortunately Moen stands behind their products and will provide a new cartridge.
Contact Moen and describe your problem.

Waters hot instead of cold when you turn it on

You have to remove cartridge and rotate 180 degrees then re-install. Was it removed or replace lately?

HOW DO I FIX A LEAKING FAUCET ON A MOEN L3189

you need to remove the cartridge behind the handle. If it is dripping from the spout or shower head.
If you pull the handle to turn it on it is called a moentrol valve and take a number 1225 cartridge....it it just turns to turn on it is called a posi-temp valve and takes a 1222 cartridge.

Moen posi-temp for shower pressure

Is this only happening in your shower? Or through the hole house? Maybe you shower head has a flow restrictor in it. Try removing it!
