Print coming out gray even with brand new HP cartridge

I have Laserjet 4L, (black and White) which has operated well for number of years, since the print was coming out almost gray, instead of black, I changed to brand new HP Laserjet cartride (92274A), but still get the same gray print.

Same problem with a new cartridge which I probably didn't need. Self Test ... click recycle button twice produces a good black image but printing from a scanner or wp file produces faded gray images. Any tips?

Either it could be set in the printer properties to print in gray scale or it could be the lens of the printer that needs replacement as if the lens go weak the prints come out very light.

I have one problem with hp laserjet P4014n printing all paper black. the background is black all but word are showing can someone help me in this

If your background is "Black" it's going to print it all black, change your background color to "Gray" and your machine will then print a gray background instead of black. Also note that when you print a black background your toner life expectancy will be no where your expected yield ratio is. Average yield is 5% for X (X meaning size of cartridge) amount of printed pages. If your printing a black background your utilizing 100% yield coverage. Not sure if this is the answer your looking for. However basic black and white printing with a black background will print the page completely black.

I've got a 4L that has been an absolute workhorse and it makes a grinding noise here recently and will not print. I hate to replace it as the cartridge lasts about 10 years. I know its about 15 years...

The grinding noise is caused by a cracked motor gear. This is a very common issue on the Laserjet 4L and 4P units. It is a fairly easy repair but you will need to disassemble the printer to get to the drive motor. The gear is available here:

Why does printed page have gray shaded area on left side of the page and vertical gray stripes on rest of the page?

The drum unit on your printer is probably the cause of this. Try replacing the toner cartridge (drum is a part of the toner)

It prints gray instead of black. I set it to econo print and even after changing the setting to no econo, it still prints gray.

Maybe your toner cartridge is bad. Or the transfer roller might be very dirty.
When was the last time your poor printer had a maintenance kit installed?

My HP LaserJet 4L printer just makes a grinding sound-won't print

That printer has a gear on the motor that cracks. You can fix it with a new or used motor. Or get a different machine on craigslist. Thank you, Steven 805-520-3003

The image drum is not getting the correct signal at the correct time. It is time to retire the 4L and replace it with a newer, faster LaserJet. You'll be glad you did.

Part of print is missing (far right or far left side),instead ver

Sounds like you have a torn/missed fixing film. look up over the fixing unit (the one that gets one) and try to find a gray tu, it should be complete, from left to right and not torn. no parts should be missing. if one border is like orange or missing then your problem is the fixing film.

LaserJet 6L Prints Outlook content too light

You can run into these problems when using non OEM toner cartridges. It sounds like anything that is printed in a light gray is not printing correctly.
