Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

What ARE those small black particles/chunks?

When reheating items for a minute or 2 I don't use a cover but I noticed small dark particles after heating a cup of water very recently. The particles settled to the bottom of the cup and did not dissolve. I'm trying to figure out what this stuff is. Thanks for your help.

Response by ahohbull: (re black particles)

the microwave is old and there appears to be brownish rust on the interior ceiling but the particles that fell into the cup of water were dark colored and eventually sunk. The make is a Rival MT660 that had no loss of cooking power despite it's old age. We replaced it w/ a new one yesterday.

I'm still trying to determine what the particles were since I probably injested some of them. I'm lookin for educated guesses. Many thanks...

Are there any black particles on the ceiling of the microwave?

Otherwise, they are probably bits of the foam seals that are used in the duct work of the oven.

    Over time, these can disintegrate.

    Is it very old?

What is your brand and model number?

Once the seals get so bad, they need to be replaced to ensure proper cooking and cooling of the magnetron.

How do you use the kitchen timer and cook at the same time?

If you have the kitchen timer set for instance for 10 minutes and it is counting down, and then you want to reheat you coffee for 2 minutes. You would hit either time cook or reheat button and enter 2 minutes ten hit start. The microwave will heat your coffee and show the 2 minute countdown for that. When done it will revert back to what is left on the 10 minute kitchen timer without missing a beat on most microwaves.

GE Microwave Model JEM25WY001 dead

It may have blown the line fuse, the TCO (thermal cutout) above the magnetron, or the TCO on top of the oven cavity.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There's a helpful exploded view here, and you can order parts from the Pros here.
Here is a video showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
Accessing some components (especially the oven cavity thermostat) for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall and take off the outer cover.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Ge spacemaker microwave jvm1650wh03 randomly shuts off and requires you to reset clock before continuing

The problem is in the keypad control board, this item alone is at least $97.00 for the part and does not include labour.

Microwave arcing

The magnet item is known as a magnetron, as far as your pcb is concerned check for shorts on the hv diode, be advised microwaves can kill you, never work with the cover off and always discharge the HV capacitor, if you don't know how to do this then do yourself a favour and get the lid back on and buy a new one, If you do know then good luck!!

My dishes are dirty after the wash. The glasses have small particles dried on the inside. They are upside down. How does it do that? Thanks.

Thanks for using FixYa.

An answer for your question about your dishwasher could be that your jets or spray arms are clogged.

1. Please look inside the dishwasher for obvious obstructions and turn the spray arms to make sure they move freely.
2. Now look at the bottom sprayer and at the little holes. If you see food or stuff in any of the holes, use small tweezers to remove.
3. Also look in the bottom area for items which may be blocking the water delivery hole.
4. Finally, look at the top sprayer arm. Using a flashlight, look closely for food or other particles which may be clogging the holes.

Let me know if this helps or if you have questions.

Thanks again for using FixYa,

When starting to reheat a loud crack, explosion, sound occurred,

As long as the door latches correctly there should be no danger. Some items will cause loud "explosions" in a microwave, such as whole potatoes when the skin has not been pierced. If the food contains pickling spices for example, the seeds will explode with a very loud sound like a gun.

As long as the oven continues to heat, there may be no other problem. But I suggest you stay near the unit when using it. Watch for smoke and be alert for strange odors. You don't mention the age of your oven but if it is new you can call GE customer care at 800 432 2737.

My approx. 6 wk old GE Microwave (Model JES1358WL01), Ser.#TM904440U began "arcing" last week for no apparent reason--it did it again this morning while I was reheating my coffee...the same...

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet. In some models it is the plastic ceiling.

The small type can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
