Question about Canon DC20 DVD Camcorder

10 Answers

Canon DC20 only powers on and operates with side screen closed

The DC20 works perfectly if I use the eyepiece and not the side screen view. If I am recording, through the eypiece, and open the side, the entire camcorder shuts down. If I hook it up to AC power, the side can be open and record properly, when doing this, if I unplug the
AC power, the Canon powers off, like a light switch turned off. The camera has never been dropped that I know of, but maybe the kids did drop it and didn't tell me.

How do I realign the inside, or is there a place I should send the camcorder to?

The side LCD panel requires more power to run than the viewfinder. There is a small switch inside the unit that enables/disables the side panel from working. This switch seems to be working as the unit works when powered from the AC adapter. However, the higher current draw may be causing the voltage to drop slightly when using the battery and thus causing the internal protection circuitry to shutdown the camera. This is done to prevent damage to the camera when the battery becomes faulty. The problem here sounds more like the voltage detection circuit being faulty. This is not a problem that will be solved remotely. Unfortunately you will need to have this unit serviced by a shop where they can run the camera while opened up on a jig to track this down. Measurements will need to be taken while the camera is being run. My suggestion would be to invest in a detailed estimate from an authorized Canon service center. Report the results here and we may be able to walk you through the actual repair.

Please note that the "fix" for this may involve a board repalcement as few shops perform component level repairs on these cameras.

Hi, sounds like you have a technical problem with your camcorder Canon DC20. Your problems sounds like it is a mecanical problem rather then something that can be easelly fixed . If you are wondering about what you can do to fix it or where to take it, I would defeetly recommend that you rather contact the manufaturer so they can fix it for you. If you are interested go to this link: https://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=OnlineRepairBookingAct&fcategoryid=261&modelid=11817

I also recommend you call the technical support team at 1-800-OK-CANON for further information.

jus follow tis...
1. Remove any videotapes in camcorder.
2. Remove memory sticks, cards, or other media.
3. Power off the camcorder.
4. Remove the battery if on battery power.
5. Plug in the camcorder AC adapter.
6. Power on the camcorder.
else you may have a faulty charger or internal battery. If your camera is still under warranty take it back to the shop where you bought it, explain what is happening, and ask for a refund or exchange.

Well if this problem exists even after replacing the battery ,then the battery compartment is inside the LCD display slot as soon as you open the LCD screen its makes the battery to loose contact hence powering down , as soon as you open the LCD screen press the battery and power it on....

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

It would appear that the electronics of the "side screen view" is consuming power over and above its rated/specs. Thus opening and activating while the camera is on battery triggers a shutdown. With the AC adapter plugged in, the power is supplied by the adapter and the built-in over current protection from the battery does not engage:

Initially, pls try to clean/scrape make shiny the battery contacts both of the camera and the battery. If this is not corrective, then it may be to your advantage to seek the services of an authorized Service Center rather than consider a DIY (do-it-yourself).

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Hi,
As you said, camera works fine on side LCD if powered by AC adapter, so Battery is suspected and seems weak. Try to use new battery.
If camera has some problem in circuit board, then It should not be function on ac charger too.

OK, seems bit complicated problem in Canon DC20.
Problem can be in door hing assembly that being touched in battery power section and caused shutdown immediately or connecting flexible wire between LCD board and camera main board.
Above ideas need camera to be apart for confirmation.
    Thank you.

Try a replacement battery, if you have the problem only when the camcorder is working on batteries, it is possible that this is caused by a defective battery.

Go to any repair shop and test the camera with a replacement battery.

My camera screen wont come on?

Generally when there is no power, the camera simply needs to be serviced by a professional. This came up as a Canon as someone had mentioned Canon in one of the answer. If it is in fact a Canon Powershot, your best bet for service would be: www.CamerasAndParts.com That is who we recommend for the Powershots. They do outstanding work and they are very affordable (generally $79 or $89) including all the servicing for the camera, parts and labor for the no power problem, and return shipping, they're unbeatable for the Canons and they do excellent work. Best of luck with the issue at hand.

Problem viewing planets using 25mm eye piece. which eye piece works the best? nextstar 80 slt

The smaller the number on the eyepiece the greater the magnification-- the maximum magnification of any telescope is about 50 times aperture. You scope is about 3 inches -- so 150 power is the maximum usable magnification.

BUT-- only under perfect conditions -- perfect sky-- perfect optics -- perfect eyepieces. Usually 30-40 times aperture is all you will get on a typical night with some turbulence in the atmosphere.

Not seeing

The city lights will not hamper planetary viewing. Excessive power is a common mis-conception. Use 80x or so for best viewing. That would be about a 4mm eyepiece. Start with lower powers and work upwards in easy steps. The greater the power, the narrower the field of view, and it becomes very hard to find anything at all.

Canon dc20

disc that came with camera - still works ? if not ( no disc works , now ) put the camera to your ear , before closing door : if there is no noise after door closes , the switch on the door may be out of alignment - but if there are whirring sounds , your lens may be dirty ( cleaning with q tip and windex risks voiding your warranty ) or your discs may be scratched - the index is near the center hole of the disc , and must be clear of smudges etc .
