Please tell me more about the sliding ring on the C8.Perhaps you are talking about the clamping rings.
you can get new ones... let me know , i will post a link...

Is the AZimuth clutch locked down? Then either a gear is broken inside or the worm gear inside has slipped and is not engaing. You can return these to Celestron for repair, here:

Sound like a gear inside is either broken or the worm gear is locked up. Celestron can repair this if you call them here:
