Question about Apple iBook G3 Clamshell (M2453B) Mac Notebook

1 Answer

Hi, I just bought a clamshell ibook for my 9 yr. old. It has upgraded ram and Mhz. I'm afraid something is wrong with it. It takes FOREVER to load, makes a loud noise, and (although it has and airport card) we can't seem to connect to the internet. Help! Christmas is in 10 days!

I purchased a clamshell off ebay and I cannot seem to figure out how to connect wirelessly to the internet or even determine if it is wireless. This is my daughters bday present who will be 8 soon so any help will be great!!!

    Hi Ray,

Sounds lke a multitude of problems.

The 'Forever to load' could be because of the amount and type of software installed. Is it a clean install and is there any virus software like Norton installed?

The 'loud noise', what does it sound like and where does it seem to be coming from? the front, back or sides. Could be a fan or could be the drives.

Your network problem could be one of many things but I'm sure I can work you through it. First I need to know what version of operating system you are using, ie, OS9, OSX 10.1,2,3,4 or 5.

    Cheers

Hi Sahemric,

What OS is running on your system also, OS9 or OSX. I've got to wrack my brain to remember how to check in OS9 (it's been about 6yrs since I last used it) but in OSX it's very simple. Goto the apple symbol in the menu bar choose 'About this mac' then 'more info...' and in the left hand 'Contents' panel in the 'Network' section is 'AirPort Card'. Select that and if it says 'No information found' then you ain't got it! Otherwise it will give you the Make, model and settings.

If you have got one then the setup is different for each version of the OS so again I'd need that but that should get you part way there

All the best
Sean

Hard drives are rated with an expectation of roughly five years before serious failures occur. This model is at least 14 years old so it's not surprising that it's reporting missing files.

Will the Microsoft Lifecam vx-5000 work with iBook apple?

The lifecam is compatible with 10.4 and 10.5. Your clamshell may be able to run 10.4 but it would need Firewire and 256mb of ram along with 15gb of free HD space. Then you'll need to get the CD or DVD.

Hi i have a ibook g3 { i just bought it from a friend} i can i restore to a factory settings without a trouble

To restore an iBook G3 to factory settings you need the installation CDs that came with the iBook. Ask your friend to find them. Sometimes you can purchase replacement sets on eBay, but they have to be for your exact model. Please realize that the original installation CDs that came with this iBook will contain OS 9, not OS X, so I question whether you really want to restore this machine "to factory settings." What you may choose to do instead is a "clean install" from a more recent retail OS X CD or DVD.

Try with Safari or Firefox. If still no pages loading then your Airport is not connecting to the Internet. If you are using a cable modem contact your ISP for assistance.

Clamshell Ibook restore cd's I need everything

The clamshell ibooks came with either OS 8.6 or OS 9 on them. If you are just looking to start over from scratch, then you can use a standard OS 9 CD and have them do a complete re-install. I say this without knowing the nature of the problems they are having.

IBook Clamshell Startup problem after Upgrade

Given that the "power ring" no longer lights up, I am wondering if the DC-in board is mis-connected in some way. No light = no power going to logic board, and no power going to charge the battery.

An alternative test would be to borrow a charged battery from another clamshell. If the machine boots, you know that there's something askew with the DC-in board.

BTW, there are excellent take-apart guides for iBooks at iFixit.com
