Some of these devices have a port....on one side (or top) that looks similar to that of a cell phone charger connection that allow file transefer via a USB cable or by removing the memory card. This particular modle allows neither. To get the files off of the recorder you have to literally play the file into your computer...can be time consuming but this is how you do it. You will need a cable that has the headphone plugs on both ends. One end goes into the earphone connection on the recorder and the other into the microphone (input) of your computer. Most computers have a built in program that allow recording. You record (into the computer) what the VN-5000 in playing...thru the output of the headphone cord. Not an easy cut and paste solution but is what is required to get the files off the device. Best to you.
Sounds like a internal microphone issue in this case you will need a camera shop to have a look locally, But if your sure all the settings are correct nothing is muted then the problem is the internal microphone assembly inside. Let me know ether way.

format the memory card by using low level format in your camera itself. if it s not working. keep camera in vedio mode and use view finder for shooting. now transfer them to ur computer. if the vedio plays sucessfully in computer means there is some fault with LCD only
If you have a USB card reader for your memory card, just plug it into the computer and the computer will treat the memory card like a thumb drive.
Otherwise, once you select the Mass Storage option, you need to plug the camera into the computer and it should be treated like a thumb drive.
I personally perfer the USB card reader, its a lot easier than having to keep up with a cable and remembering to change the camera over to the appropirate mode. Plus the USB Card readers can be found under 10 bucks on the net now.
Hope this helps
