I have a two phone system, the main phone works great but the second phone says unavailable when I tried to use it and it also doesn't ring. I have tried placing it back on the charger for 20 seconds and it still doesn't work. I even tried unplugging the whole system and still no luck.

I have this same system, and could like it if it didn't make people who call sound so far away and hard to hear. I'm thinking of getting rid of them.
But for your problem. The phones in the chargers often "loose contact with the base", for whatever reason it happens. Take them from their charger and place them in the charger for the answering machine main base for about 30 seconds. Then they will "reconnect themselves to the main base". Then put them back to their own chargers and they should be back to their normal use unless their batteries are getting weak.
They can not work without contact to the main base, you have to have the main base plugged in and hooked to the phone line.
you have to put the second headset in the main phone charging base( ie the base where the phone line is plugged in) for a while (at least 30 seconds) for it to register to phone then you can go on to use it and charge it in its regular charging base
You have to register the hand set in the main base. Place each handset in the base for 15 seconds minimum. It will change form unavailable to Ready when it grabs the signal from the base. If the power goes out, you will have to re-register each hand set in the base before you use them again.
