Check to see if the RFID (green ring) from the old ribbon has come off and is stuck near the reader (located behind the green stem). I've seen that happen. I've also see some bad RFID rings. If that happens they should have a warranty from Fargo.

Common problem with the DTC300, C30, DTC400. Upgrade the firmware and printer driver from Fargosupport.com. Then calibrate the ribbon sensor through the printer driver calibrate tab.

first, try to calibrate the ribbon, if it does not work, you probably have worn out rollers, and possibly a broken o-ring. if you want more info, call us at 310-671-8018, thanks adi
When you have a ribbon mis-cue, first remove the ribbon. Go to the printer driver, printing preferences, calibrate, sensors. Click sesors then send... You should hear 2 beeps. Put you ribbon back in and try to print again.
If you still have the mis-cue it is a belt issue all DTC400's made 2006 and prior have had this belt issue. I don't recommend fixing this yourself, send it to a authorized Fargo repair center. This way it is under warranty.
The DTC400 has an o ring that drives the card feed rollers. Fargo has had a problem on older DTC400 printers with the o ring stretched or broke. This causes irregular feed roller issues, ribbon breakage or misalignment of print registration.
It is recommended to do a ribbon sensor calibration. This can be done through your print driver using the directions in this link.
Your DTC400 came with a two year manufacturer warranty. Contact Fargo Technical Support at 800-459-5636.
In the printing preferences there is an auto detect ribbon button . you should select it.
Your ribbon will be updated. Also if printer asks you if the ribbon is correct select yes. The printer will then print on whatever ribbon you have intalled. This doesnt work with test prints
