I just installed a gas heater and I am concerned that it might not be big enough to heat my pool effectively. It seems to take about 5 hours to bring the temperature up about 3 degrees. is it normal?

The time it has taken for you to heat your pool 3 degrees is correct. The heater is working fine. We would suggest you cover your pool. This will save gas and money, as well decrease the time needed to raise your water temperature.
