Cannont connect 3rd laptop to Linksys Wireless router WRT54G
I moved in with some friends and have been trying to connect to the wireless router. They both have no problems connecting to the router. I have the correct network key and have typed it in multiple times knowing that the characters are case sensitive. Their is a particular setting on the router that must be preventing additional devices to connect. Reason I know this is my PS3 will not connect either! The DHCP setting is set at 50. When I try to connect wirelessly, it continually states "Acquiring network address". I can connect to the router directly and it works fine. I have spoken with tech support and they recommend that I switch the security setting from WPA to WEP. However, this router is not my personal router but my friends and I don't want to change any settings if possible. Any suggestions?

Re: Cannont connect 3rd laptop to Linksys Wireless router...
Try logging into the router to see whether the Wireless MAC Filter is Enabled. Since you already know that the DHCP limit is set to 50, I presume you've already logged into the router successfully. The Wireless MAC Filter is on the Wireless tab (the second tab, next to Setup), and is the third parameter from the left.
If the filter is enabled, simply add the MAC ID of each of your devices to Permit list (this won't affect your friends' use of the router).
If both of their devices work, and none of your devices work, then the odds are pretty good that the MAC ID Filter is the culprit. I hope this helps - please let know if I can be of any further assistance.

No it will not work you cannot connect a router to another router wirelessly and it will most likely not be detecting each other, routers are built to transmit internet signals from modems if you have a router and a computer but you do not have your own internet connection that will not work conencting to another router you will need USB Wifi Card transmitter/reciever to be able to connect to your friends wireless internet.
but if your friend only has a modem you can lend him your router and get a USB wifi transmitter/reciever to be able to connect to your router that is conencted to your friends modem this will work but will not work if you and you friend will both have a router creating a network.
Hi, They are four reasons why your wireless would say "acquiring network address" and later changing into "Limited or no connectivity" 1) Invalid WEP/WPA Encryption key. 2) Mac Filtering, Your friends might have disallowed the mac address of your laptop or he it might be filtered. 3) Short IP range mentioned on the router (May your friend has specified a short ip address range for DHCP) 4) Invalid configuration for wireless on Windows Vista To this problem, do this on your laptop 1) Start >> Control Panel >> Network and Sharing Center (Classic View) >> Manage Wireless network>> remove the wireless network by clicking and then right clicking on top of it and remove. 2) Now try to connect again to the wireless network, reenter the key and that should do it. If this doesn't work, then probably you have to ask your friend about the 2 and 3 possible cause listed above. Good luck! And Thanks.
Your friend is able to go online using the same wireless network. that means the wireless network is working properly and there might be a problem with your computer . You said that you can connect to the wireless network but you can not go online. Check the IP address and the default gateway of the computer. Try to ping the router and DNS server and check what happens. Make sure that there is no static IP address on the computer.

When you try to connect to the wireless network, Do u get any error message ? You said that your other wireless is working properly. that means the router is working properly. Check the wireless security settings of the router. Do not change the wireless settings, just check the wireless settings. You will need to open the Web Interface of the router. One thing to keep in mind is that there are several different router/adapter models, types, and signal strengths. If your house/apartment is older, it may have poor wire insulation. This would create large electromagnetic interference for your wireless signal. This can also happen with large appliances such as a refridgerator or generator. Wireless also has diminished returns when passing through concrete or walls made with thick/heavy material.
You may try moving the router to a different, more central portion of your residence to see if the signal improves in all areas. Try to determine which direction, from the router, it tends to have the lowest signal strength and determine what may be causing the loss of signal strength.
Aside from that, if possible test with a different router/wireless adapter. You can accomplish this by having a friend visit you with their laptop or visiting a friend's wireless network and seeing if you have the same problem. The later of that advice applies to wireless hot spots like Starbucks or McDonalds/Dairy Queen.
When i try to play halo3 with my friends i get the same problem. I cant connect to them and sometimes i also cant hear some people talk. Some problems might be that your NAT is set to STRICT or MODERATE you will want it to be open to play with your friends. I dont really have an answer but you will need to get in your apartments router to change the settings to get the NAT to become open. If you type in on the google search bar: Cant connect to friends on xbox live there will be some answers for this problem.
ok, you seem to be going around it the wrong way round, if you are trying to connect to your friends network you would not connect to his pc you would connect to his router, so you cannot use your router to connect to his.
assuming you have a wireless network adapter, which you must have, you simply connect to your friends router via your pc and not your router, you cannot have one router connecting to another, only signal boosters.
when your'e network adapter detects a network, select your'e friends and then enter the passkey when prompted, so turn off your router,as it can only be used for your own network, as it musn't be connected to your modem, or else you wouldnt need to connect to your friends.
If you want to connect to your friends pc for file sharing make sure he has is sharing set up and you both have the same workgroup name e.g. mshome
