SOURCE: DVD-RW drive burns music CDs and DVDs, but not data CDs

Alright. Seems like Windows, for some reason, doesn't think your drive is able to burn things when trying to deal with this kind of disc.

I'll need further information, like if you use another program to burn music CDs, and what other things might have changed the registry settings. I know of a fix that resolves issues with the Windows version of data CD burning, but it only applies to CD-R and CR-RW drives..

Sometimes a hijacked copy being burned at the time may have a glitch associated with the burn time write.. And the read time may not like it and can not read it. Spin speed and pickups have sometimes been at odds
If you can read the disk as a data disk and copy tie files in a folder you may operate from there.

As the movie bought from iTunes has apple digital rights management (DRM) license protection which don't allow users to burn iTunes Video Movie TV Shows files to DVD with DVD burning software directly. Commonly, we will need a DRM Removal software to strip iTunes DRM and convert itunes video to mpeg 2(DVD format) first, then burn converted itunes Video to DVD, now, the whole operation will go easy and convenient, the tool we use in this article can remove DRM from itunes, burn iTunes to DVD with only a few steps.

Need to find correct driver to reinstall.

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.

If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in "My Computer", please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showth...t=21669&page=4

It contains instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix

Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.

And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

Code: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131
(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)

Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from the Web site below.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

After performing this registry fix, just reboot the pc. Now your drive should be visible in My Computer and work properly.

My laptop's DVD player (Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K17KL) won't read or write DVDs but will play CD audios. Is this a hardware or software problem?

It could be a wrong burning software, try out Nero, but my experience is that usualy these things are dieing this way, first they won't write dvd than won't even read later they are even haveing troubles with cds.
If that's the case than it's time to use your warranty if you have any left, or if you don't but you want to fix it than just bring it to the local laptop repair center and they'll change it for you for 30-60 GBP+ their services or just buy one at ebay and do it yourself, but in that case double check what you are ordering, or ask the seller about compatibility.
