I have the same problem, light on, but tv doesn't turn on or off. What is a psa board?

  • Anonymous Jan 09, 2009

I bought mine on the 31st of December and it worked great FOR 8 DAYS. Now it won't turn on at all.

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2009

my vizio p50 of two and a half years, has just done this exact thing. has power but just a orange standby light lit on the front. Will not turn on at all. I've been dealing with vizio for weeks now. As it turns out vizio are honoring the warranty even though mines out of warranty. I believe this is as a courtesy to Costco and AMEX. They have extended the warranty by 12 months. But mine is an older model. I have waited to be contacted by the vizio repair agent in Chicago for 2 weeks now, still nothing! So after yet another call to vizio they tell me they will do a swap out for a new 50 inch tv as the parts needed to fix mine are on back order for several months. try calling vizio and ask,(Nicely is key here). and they might just swap it out for you for a new one. hope this helps. As I'm sick of seeing my $1900 paperweight on my wall...

My vizio recently did the same exact thing. Vizio sent an HDTV tech out to fix it and it was the power board. He put a new board in (took 15 min) and the tv works like new.

Assuming the Vizio name is the powerlight, then this is your problem and solution........................The caps (capacitors) in the powerboard are going out. This is a very common problem in all class and price ranges of modern lcd and plasma tv's/ monitor's. I don't know if this problem has been like this for awhile or it just started, but either way, if the tv takes an abnormal amount of time to "warm" up then it most likely will go out all the way sometime in the (near) future. If you have a tiny bit of will and knowledge ypou can open the unit and get to the print board. Examine this for "popped" capacitors, they will have a buldging top instead of a flat one. Im gonna try to include a pic of them here, if i can get it this time, I've tried bfore lol. But you can google image a "popped" or "bad" capacitor and you would be able, with ease, to diagnose if you have any of these. Usually only one or two. Radioshack sells capacitors (couple anyway) for $1.59 each. MAKE SURE the replacement is of the SAME voltage or HIGHER, or you will be right back replacing those 2. Every capacitor has a negative pole marked with an (-) on the side of the capacitor(by one of the "legs", always puit the negative (-) "leg" of the new capacitor in the same hole in the printboard as where the previous negative (-) "leg" of the capacitor was ( a capacitor with the negative and positive "legs" put in backwards will result in the new piece "popping" as sson as you turn it on!!) make sure the "uf" rating (for example the most common popped capacitor is the 1000 uf) is the same as the one you are replacing. I needed 1000 uf, 105 c and 26v (volt) ratings for the 1 capacitor I needed to replace to fix my LG 19" lcd panel monitor I found by the trash that the light came on off, but it didn't come on. I replaced that capacitor with ; 1000uf, 85 c and 36 v (volts0...It works fine eventhough the volts and the temperature rating (36v and 85c) was not the same as the (26v(volt) and 105c ) capacitor I removed !! Further, I've replaced capacitors that had the celcius rating of 105 with the only ones Radioshack had, namely 85 c(celsius) they have been working great, but I'm not sure about any effect, nor have I heard or read (yet?) about that making an urgent difference. Many threads that I've read people have done the same, so we should be ok (my stuff has been running good for a while longer then most brand new ones!.............(all these ratings ; 'uf ' and 'c' etc are on the side of the capacitor you are replacing and on the side of the ones you are replacing them with)...For all this all you need is the cheapest solder gun u can find (I bought one for $7.99 at Radioshack), a camera (to take pictures as you go to remember how to reassemble the unit) and, once you have your materials, 20 minutes to replace 2 or 3 capacitors and you are good to go...Most monitors and tvs (lcd/plasma) I've seen you have to lay flat on the ground/bed/blanket etc, to work on (screen side down). Usually there are 2 or 3 screws (or a few more) to remove, then you will have to carefully (its comes off easily most times)insert a flat screwdriver inbetween the casing and gently pry it up as you go around the whole frame. Sometimes you have to remove the little washer arouind the cable input orso, just be gentle and you cant go wrong. Once insidet here will be a box with wires running to the sides etc...unplug, gently, these wires and open the box. Inside you will find 2 or 3 circuitboards, check them all for "popped" capacitors, replace, reassemble and plug it in....Have fun becoming an overnight tv mechanic lol!

If this has helped you (or not), please rate, thank you

check out the power supply board! Look for popped capacitors. They either leak or swell up. They are the can shaped things on the board with the plastic coverings on them...you can usually see a swollen cap sticking up over its covering as a telltale sign.

Good luck and be careful

Here is a link to the Online User's Manual for your TV in case you don't have one already:

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:z4kjPAcpGywJ:www.vizio.com/documents/downloads/hdtv/VU42LF/Manual.pdf+vizio+VU42L+fuse&hl=en&gl=ca&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESj4QgBLP8c9lcHQnjaCEE8jv7u6hr8LJ2nQPfaXPZSQ__EcWuaUV87DM4fstqd5caBPBDLL4oCW8_njGo1_NFx2nVCcrrleQrayRdd4-uK_UH0ss-9t9InUG6dUDYHDxroxPc29&sig=AHIEtbSDMOtw3BgFtzO6CkcU-FUNHlIYbw

Some LCD TVs have a fuse fitted right where the power cord enters the case and is accessible through a small removable panel. However, I didn't see any mention of one for this model in the manual or on related forums.

It certainly seems like you are not alone in your troubles with VIZIO products though. See the disparaging comments regarding your model tv at the following link:

http://hdguru.com/disposable-hdtvs-vizio-responds/108/comment-page-4/

Unfortunately none of them seem to have any solutions either.

Good luck.
Sorry I couldn't help more.

Sounds like a problem in the power supply. Possible bad capacitors if you can have it checked out.

There are several things that could be wrong. When you plug in the set, is the Vizio light orange? When you try to turn it on, does it turn white?

The power supply get's it "turn on" signal from the main board. It is very likely you have a faulty main board. Do you have electronics experience??

Solutions (2) Best Solution That little fella is only turned off by unplugging it. If all those little lights in America could be turned off we could do with one less nuclear power plant. If unplugging it is not an option, my wife's solution is to cover it with a piece of black tape.

remove all screws on the back of the tv, carefully pull off back cover. you will see two circuit boards one on the left (Power) and one on the right (Video) on the Video board there is a small plug on the right side with a yellow, white and red wire going into a small white connector. the red wire is what controls the orange light on the front. now that the plug is pulled turn it over and you should see a small white plastic piece that holds each metal connector on the end of the wires in. pry this piece of plastic up for the red wire and pull at the same time, the wire will come out of the connector. now tape the metal connector with electrical tape and tuck it behind something or tape it to the chassis. plug your connector back in. put the rear cover back on. now your tv will only show the vizio logo in white when you have the power on. If you wish to disable the logo for both orange and white just disconnect the white plug completely.

Will not turn on even though it is plugged into a good outlet

If the Vizio light does not light up you need a power control board. If you are able to do basic soldering I would check the primary fuse, if that is ok, take a look at the Row of Caps along the aluminum heat sink. I have found the 35V 470's on the 12V side to have failed. Now My TV turns on, however thats as far as it gets, It seems like the main board is failed.
