Frequency response in audio product statistics is used as a measurement for how well that piece of hardware/software will reproduce the audio as the audio engineer intended.

There are two things to look at concerning frequency response.

1) What is the range? (20hz - 20khz)?
2) What is the accuracy (+/- X db)?

Humans have an audio response range of 20hz - 20 khz. The closer a product is to these numbers, the more accurate, and therefore better, it is.

Second, you must look at the accuracy. This detail is left out of many consumer products but you will find it in higher-end products. This second statistic (+/- X db), is very important however. Just because a product picks up between 20hz - 20khz doesn't mean it's any good. For example, if it has say +/- 30db because it will pick up the best frequency 30db better than the worst frequency. Technically, the best numbers for this value should be +/- 0db.

However, not everyone loves such an accurate response of +/- 0db because it may not "sound good." For example, when you get some blasting subs in your car, you're actually adding anywhere between 5db - 10db to the bass frequency response (depending on how loud the subs are).

The bottom line is, frequency response rates the accuracy of audio reproduced compared to its original state.

Frequency response is a specification which, in headphones, describes how well the headphone reproduces the range of audio. The frequency response describes those frequencies that the headphones can acceptably reproduce.
