Might also try changing boot settings in BIOS so the PC does not attempt to boot from USB devices, in this case the external hard disk.

I have the optiplex gx280 and installed a new wd 1 tb internal hard drive now I have the blue screen with "inaccessible_boot_device" 0x0000007b. How do I fix this?

Did you add this as a second hard drive? Or did you replace the original one with this one? If you installed this as a second hard drive, what has probably happened is that the BIOS is now looking at the new drive, thinking it is the boot drive. If you go into the bios, you will see two items under "bootup". One is boot device priority. This is where you select whether you want the CD, or the HDD, or the USB to be the first priority boot device. Then there is another for HDD boot priority. Look under that one and ensure that your original HDD is selected as the primary boot disk.

Dualbooting Win XP Pro on different drive

XP is dead. I recommend you make sure any critical data is backed up, and start saving/looking for a newer machine.

PC boots up then screen goes blank

You are asking for trouble by placing programs that Windows uses on the other drive. You are better off using the 1 TB drive as a system drive. Sounds like your OS is corrupted.

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.

Hello,

Try replacing the HDD cable & check jumpers on HDD on right mode (Primary/secondary/cable-select.

If above is ok. Go to your bios setup & check whether it is detected there. try loading Bios defaults.

Hope above helps.
