Question about Dell Latitude C400 Notebook

1 Answer

Audio Problem Hi, I have installed a USB2.0 PCMCIA card into my Dell C400 laptop. My sound no longer works and I cannot even find the device in the device list. I have tried re-installing the drivers fro the audio, however, this does not resolve the problem. Any advice would be appreciated! Chris

Remove the card and use system restore in accesories to see if you can restore to a time previous to installing the card. If the problem persists, you can run dxdiag, go to start>run, then type dxdiag and hit enter, go to the audio tab and it will point to the problem

Does this laptop have a built in wireless card?

No This is a reasonably old system, You will need to use either a PCMIA wireless card, or a usb wireless adapter. Both of these can work with this system.

A distorted sound is coming from my speakers even if i connect speakers

It is a possibility that you are getting feedback from a device that is near by. Possibly a cell phone or other device. I would recommend moving the computer to a different location and removing all electronic devices from beside the computer, then reconnecting speakers.

It is also possible that you have a bad sound card. If that is the case, you will need to purchase another sound card and replace the old one. I have included instructions on how to replace your sound card below:

Here is a site where you can purchase the sound card you may be in need of:

There are other sites such as Ebay where you can also purchase the sound card. The type of sound card you need is a PCMCIA Sound Card for an Acer Laptop.

Here are instructions on how to install a new sound card:
Installing a PCMCIA Sound Card in Your Acer Laptop
  1. Step 1 Locate the PCMCIA card slot on your computer. On an Acer laptop, the slot may be either on the left or the right side of the laptop.
  2. Step 2 Remove the PCMCIA card cover by pressing the "Eject" button and pulling the cover out.
  3. Step 3 Insert your PCMCIA sound card with the connectors facing in and the upper label facing up. Some PCMCIA cards will have an arrow to make it easier to orient the card correctly.
  4. Step 4 Press the PCMCIA card gently into place.
  5. Step 5 Windows will recognize the PCMCIA card and search for the needed software.
  6. Step 6 If your sound card came with an installation CD, insert it in the CD slot and follow the instructions to install applications and utilities for use with your new sound card.
Installing a USB Sound Card in Your Acer Laptop
  7. Step 1 Turn the computer on.
  8. Step 2 Plug the USB sound card into the appropriate USB plug on your laptop.
  9. Step 3 Wait for the computer to recognize the new USB device.
  10. Step 4 Insert the sound card manufacturer's CD if prompted to do so.
If a sound card is not the issue, then you possibly have circuitry issues on your laptop motherboard. For this issue, you may need to consult a certified technician at your local computer repair shop.

(If you are not a professional or are used to opening your laptop, I would recommend taking it to a local computer repair shop for a certified technician to look at this issue. Do bare in mind if you have a warranty, opening your laptop and not being a certified professional would void any warranty agreement you have with your manufacturer)

Sound card

The sound cards in the laptops usually they are built in on the motherboard and can not be replaced. If you want to add better sound to your notebook you can connect an external device like Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA Sound Card to get better sound performance to your laptop.

PS: Your laptop must have an PCMCIA slot available

Dell latitude c400 sound probel

First check the sound settings, it could just need adjusting. If the settings are correct, then you have a driver glitch, uninstall the sound drivers from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the sound card and reinstall the drivers automatically. Then check Dell's support site for updated sound drivers.

DELL 6400 pc card slot issue

check in device manager via control panel, then click classic view; that the pcmcia card bus controller is present in the list and install the card reader driver if one was supplied, if not then there is no need for a driver and it must be a fault with the pcmcia driver.
