Question about Maytag Neptune MDG5500AW Gas Dryer

1 Answer

Does not start when cold

I have a MDG5500AW Gas Dryer that is tempermental. It works fairly well in the warmer months but jams up when it gets cold. When I press the start button, the lights come on, then it does nothing (light stays on frozen). Some times the drum turns a bit. If I keep trying the buttons it may eventually start (have better luck in anti wrinkle mode). I had the same problem last Winter. It worked fine this last Spring, Summer, Fall.

Now that we had a real cold day, it's just frozen stuck and the lights won't go off even pressing the off button. HELP...

There is a diagnostic worksheet behind the aluminum panel on the back. In it it talks about the ambient room temperature must be above 50 degrees.

Very common problem. The solenoids when cold will sometime work once then get hot and fail. Replace the coils. I made a short video which shows how it works and how to replace the coils on a similar dryer with the same type of solenoids:

Why does it start to heat up, then goes cold and won't dry the the clothes?

Basic gas dryer failure elements are the igniter, the thermocouple, and the gas valve. Even a cracked igniter that appears sound can cause the problem you describe.

The dryer doesn't heat throughout the cycle. the heat only comes out in the beginning but then turns cold and the laundry doesn't get dry.

Hello- You will need to have the Coils replaced, they are not holding the valve open consistently, it is a fairly common issue and presents itself as you describe. The parts are fairly inexpensive but you should have a Tech out to change them for you. These are great dryers and I would have the Tech look through it while it's opened up...drum wheels and belt should be checked for ware. Hope this helps, best regards.

Dryer doesn't get hot. It will ignite, get warm then goes cold

I would suspect the valve coils. they will work for a short time and then fail, cool off and work again. very easy to replace.

Maytag gas dryer will heat for about one minute

The gas coils on the gas valve have gone bad. These are located on the gas valve and will be 2 solenoids. Replace them both and should be able to get as a set. 12001349 should be the number and cost less than 60.00 for the set. Good luck and thank you for using Fix Ya.

Gas dryer

blower motor relay is bad or the dials are bad
heres a way to check the dials
turn off the gas and run the dials if at anytime the dials stick during its cycle then you know this is the fault this usually the commen issues of all dryers the dials just wear out and so parts just dont work

also check the door switch this could be an issue why it gets cold clean out all vents and filters after "every use"
