Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

1 Answer

Nikon D40 Autofocus really slow

My camera has always been fine but lately, the autofocus has been REALLY slow. It still takes a picture and everything but it is really slow. The light comes on but it turns off really fast and needs to refocus. What can be causing this and how can I fix it.

PS- It has never been dropped or anything.

Have you tried changing the batteries. Sometimes even now batteries are not up to their stated voltages.

I changed my settings on my Nikon D40 to try and get pictures of lightning. Now ALL my pictures, even in daylight are coming our REALLY dark. I don't know what I did. Please help.

Make sure the aperture ring is set to "A", the mode dial to "P", the ISO to "auto ISO" with a range of about 100-400, the white balance to "auto WB", and focussing set to autofocus, not manual.

Using a Nikon D40 digital slr with a AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200 1:3.5-5.6 G ED lens I was previously able to autofocus bun now am not. Can you suggest reasons why this may be?

Please check if the Autofocus-switch on your lens is set to M/A. Also check if the Autofocus on your camera is switched on. For detailed information about your cameras autofocus, please check this site: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/af-settings.htm

D40 Autofocus problem

The auto focus on modern cameras is pretty intense, I would recommend taking it in for repair.

Nikon d40 autofocus

Look on the left side of the lens. Make sure the button is on A for auto focus and not M for manual. OR not stuck in the middle. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Autofocus

Take the camera back to the shop where you bought it. It's still under warranty, you should get a new one. It sounds defective.

Autofocus will not work,

Camera wont let you take a picture until focus is locked, why are you using M (manual focus) if you expect autofocus to do it for you? In M mode it is up to you to focus correctly or camera will not take the picture.

When the camera is in auto focus mode, it will not take the picture until it locks onto a subject. If there is not enough light, the camera will "hunt" for something to focus on. Since it can't define any edges, it won't allow the shutter to release.

The D40 base model does NOT have a powered focus lever for autofocus, so if the autofocus is not working, suspect the lens.

No pictures when in autofocus mode

I was having the same problem with my D40... but I read your post, tried switching the 18-55 lens to manual, then back to auto, and it seems to be working fine now. Hmmmm... think maybe there's a circuitry issue with the lens?
