Hi, I bought a laptop from a lost and found auction which was for a charitable organization. The operating system is password protected. It doesn't even allow me to format and re-install when I use a windows XP CD to boot the laptop (CF- Y7). Your help will be appreciated thanks :)

Hi,
Does it have floppy disk drive? If so, try creating a boot disk. Boot from the floppy, then format or re-partition. Then boot from XP CD to install XP.

Download the Ophcrack Live CD: http://pcsupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=pcsupport&cdn=compute&tm=48&gps=88_10_1152_572&f=10&su=p284.9.336.ip_p504.1.336.ip_&tt=4&bt=1&bts=0&zu=http%3A//ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ and burn it to a disk using Image Burn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Then just boot the computer with the Live CD in the CD/DVD drive. If it doesn't boot into the CD you will have to go into the BIOS and set the boot order so that the CD/DVD drive boots first. Most computers will tell you which "F" key to press to get into "setup," also called the BIOS. Sometimes it is the "del" key.

Be advised that it is a criminal offense to break into a computer that doesn't belong to you.

LOST ALL PASSWORDS FOR EVERYTHING ON MY COMPUTER!!!

ARGH! I lost my computers passwords for everything! This is for Windows Users only.

If your computer is using a genuine operating system, and you bought it in full package with the operating system, use your system disk. Slip the disk into your cd drive on startup. Some BIOS configurations (systems) automatically boot from the cd. Some have to be told to do so manually but if you lost your bios password, take out the bios battery (on the motherboard) which is a round silver one and wait 30 sec. then put back and boot. Make sure you are grounded! Most times it should work. This solution is for people with desktops. Unexperienced computer hobbiests/technicians might do something wrong with the laptop and screw it up.. Sometimes you can even press a button and the boot menu will show up. From there, choose 'BOOT FROM CD' with the system disc inside. When prompted from the cd, choose 'restore' or somthing. This will go back to previouse settings of which hopefully you didn't have a password. REMEMBER! You need to create the backup. That's a different story. If there isn't one unfortunatly you must pick Install Windows. If you lost your system cd or don't have one, you can buy or download a boot cd. If you choose to download it is a risky move. That' also a different story. I'll adress those for you guys in other posts. If you have urgent questions, send me an e-mail at computerfreak1995@hotmail.com!

I lost the login password an there no admin in safe mode

Hello,
If your PC is running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, there is still hope, though its not for the faint of heart :). A little known tool exists on the internet that lets your reset your password to nothing using Linux. It is called NT Offline; You can download it here: cd110511.zip
Extract the zip file. Burn the ISO file with Nero Burning Rom using the image burn function, or imgburn (free).
Reboot your PC with the CD in the drive. let it boot with the CD into the linux tool. If you need instructions on how to use this tool, read this link: http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/walkthrough.html
Another tutorial that is a little more visual can be found here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/ontpre-screenshot-guide.htm
Be advised, there is a slight possibility that this tool could mess your operating system up and cause you to have to re-install windows. I've used it myself countless times to help my clients and friends. If you use hard drive encryption or software encryption, removing your windows password will leave your personal files inaccessible.
Regards, Chris

I BOUGHT A USED E-MACHINES COMP WITH WINDOWS 2000 PRO AND IT IS PASSWORD PROTECTED FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER. HOW DO I GET BY THE PASSWORD? I TRIED SAFE MODE AND IT STILL WANTS THE PASSWORD!

Two methods, either use a BART PE CD to reset the administrator password as described here http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/93304/bartpe.html
or reinstall the Operating System.

This can be a problem depending on what version of Windows 2000 Professional is installed. If it was an OEM version, you should have been given a Operating System CD when you bought the computer as they are tied to the specific machine they came with. The Key will be on a sticker/label on the side or top of the box.

If it was a Volume Licence, then you will need to buy a replacement Operating System.

IF THE PASSWORD IS FOR WINDOWS LOGON THEN YOU SHOULD TRY BOOTING IN SAFE MODE AND OPEN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT WHICH IS NOT PASSWORD PROTECTED 90 OUT OF 100 TIMES IF IT IS ALSO PASSWORD PROTECTED REPLY AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE LINK TO PASSWORD RESET DISK

IF YOU FORGOT THE BIOS PASSWORD THEN ASK YOUR SYSTEM HARDWARE VENDOR OR TRY REMOVING IT BY USING THE BIOS JUMPERS ON THE MBD OR RESETTING THE CMOS BATTERY

restart pc, when its booting back up, keep pressing F8 to get windows to start in safe mode, select safe mode, then windows will start with no drivers and large desktop icons, and an administartor account will be on the desktop.

Click on the admin account and go to control panel, click users icon, then click change an account, choose your account then click on delete password, restart pc and you will be able to log in

I just purchased a compaq notebook lap top i locked it and now dont know how to unlock it Help !!!!

Hi lenise,

Have you locked your laptop through the user account or from the BIOS password protection?

Which operating system is this? XP or Vista?

If its the user account, then is it the administrator?
If yes, then you can change the admin password with a security hole in XP ( Windows installation disk would be required).

Visit the following link on how to do it!
