Longer than say a 6-ft extension cord ?

you can try what is called Power-Over-Ethernet or POE.
here is some reading material

Power over Ethernet

Basically it allows for the transmission of power via an Ethernet cable to Networking devices that are POE-capable, (like many Wireless Access Points,) If your device does not specifically have a Port labeled POE, then you do not have that as an option.

Oesnt connect wirelessly

which model router and with model modem? which one or both has wireless on it? you will only want one of them turned on (the wireless signal that is) and you will need to turn the wireless on in the setting on the unit. generally when its plugged in to the Ethernet you can do 192.168.1.1
here is a bunch of different manufactures and setting if you scroll down on this site below which also has a tutorial.

How to setup xbox live

Hello there

No problem, in just a few steps you too will be online and ready to go.

Ethernet Cable

With your Xbox 360 turned off unplug the ethernet cable from the back of your Xbox.

Xbox 360 Power Cord

Next unplug the Xbox 360 power cord from the back of the Xbox 360.

Unplug ethernet cable and power cord from the modem. Wait for about 1 minute and then plug ethernet cable back into the modem.

Now you need to plug other end of the ethernet cable into the back of the Xbox 360.

Plug the modem power cord back into your modem , wait for lights to light up on your modem (this can take up to a minute).

The last step is to plug the Xbox power cord into the back of the Xbox, turn it on and you are ready to go.

I have a wireless router in my bedroom where the internet comes into my house. My sons got a PS3 and have hooked it up, it is now saying the ethernet cord in not connected. What is this and how do I fix...

Check that ethernet cord is plugged in correctly to router.Ethernet cord looks like a telephone cord.
must be in the lan port of router.

You need to have a ethernet cable going from the back of the ps3 to your router in 1 of the ports.

or ps3 needs a wireless adaptor to pick up the wirless signal from the router.

Ethernet port not working. can i connect from my dsl by using a usb cable instead.

Yes, if your dsl modem is equipped with a usb option, you can hook it up to your computer but remember to remove the ethernet cord 1st. Both ethernet and usb cannot be connected at the same time. Once connected, your machine may search for a driver to install the modem via the usb port but it should work, especially if it's a westell. Best of luck.

Ethernet won't reconise modem for xbox live

Once you have everything hooked up:
Ethernet cord going from modem into wireless router in port labelend internet or wan, and an ethernet cord going from the router to the xbox you should try these steps:

Unplug the power cord on the modem and plug it back in- once all the lights come back on
Unplug power cord on router and plug it back in-

Hope this helps.
