At first it wasn't as bad: it would just lose power every once in a while and we would have to just open and close the door and it would be back - or just push on the front panel. It has progressed to the point that it will actually turn on upon its own accord and will usually stop within 15 seconds of starting it up, using the panel. Also, if it does not stop during a heating, the control panel will stop listening to you all together. The thing at the moment has a mind of its own - it likes to just start heating on its own, but sometimes it will randomly turn on the lights beneath the unit (which is even more befuddling, considering those are controlled by separate buttons which are not part of the board.) The screen also goes crazy when its heating, before it dies or does some other madness - the letters generally alternate in a circular fashion. For the most part the only thing that really seems to say much is the fact that the opening, closing, and other such movement of the door seems to cause most of the problem. (I guess I could be wrong about "cause" but it has a large effect.) To our much displeasure, the thing was manufactured and purchased in 2005, so warranty is not useable. So, can you help me understand what is going wrong? Also, since it could be hazardous/unnecessarily expensive in energy bills due to its behavior, do you think there is any chance that LG would fix it? Anything is helpful - thanks in advance.

It sounds very much like a bad connection on the control circuit board.

A microwave that comes on by itself can be very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

To facilitate safety & disassembly in case you or someone you know wants to consider sending in the control panel assembly, w
e have the service manual to a similar model which should be close enough to do the job.

We have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

You will need the
free Acrobat Reader to view or print it in case you don't have it.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

No metal is in microwave but it light flashes periodically and it makes a weird noise at the same time

Are you certain there is no metal or metal containing racks or dishes?

BTW, wire racks (round wire) are ok because the microwaves travel around the round wire. Flat metal reflects and causes arcing.

Everything works except the heating of food, etc.

When the magnitron fails it will do one of two things, it will give no microwave action to the centerplate or it increases in strenghth many times to where it is very hazardous. Yours appears to be the first case. I;'m assuming that you've checked the fuse on the board, seeing you were already back in there to check the harness to the magnitron.

POSSESSED MICROWAVE!

wow.......... an exorcism may be in order.......Sadly your microwave circuitry is malfunctioning which is a costly repair. I would seriously consider trashing that possessed unit and purchasing a new one. the new ones are greener too, use quite a bit less electricity

COINCIDENCE? Yes... :) So go buy another one, it'd probably be cheaper than getting the bad one repaired.
