Very loud screeching ,continuous when turned on

Hi dfabin,

Does the screeching come from the motor area or the brush/belt area?

If it's from the motor. Turn it off. It needs repair.
If it's from the brush/belt area, most likely your belt is either slipping or rubbing on something.
Do you have an owner's manual?
If you do, and the noise come from the belts, take the belt(s) off and check them for wear, stretching, anything imbedded in them. Be sure to clean all debris out of the area. and reassemble. If still noisy, the belt may be slipping and needs to be replaced.
Here's a site where you can view the parts breakdown and order parts: http://www.vacpartswarehouse.com/Bissell-Healthy-Home-Models-5770-5990-6100-6405-s/600.htm

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a vote. Thanks,

How do you change the belt of the m5088520?

Hi There,

Here's step by step instructions for you on how to replace the belt on your Dirt Devil M088520 Featherlite.

Flip cleaner to expose nozzle base. Base should lay flat and face up. To remove nozzle guard, use Phillips
screwdriver to remove the two screws. Arrows (Diagram 1) show location of screws.

Lift nozzle guard off. Slide belt off motor shaft
(Diagram 2).

Lift and remove brushroll (Diagram 3). Dispose of old belt.

TO REPLACE BELT
1. Place belt on motor shaft, then slip brushroll through belt. Place belt in area of brushroll without bristles (Diagram 4).

2. With belt in place, pull and slide brushroll into nozzle (Diagram 3) making sure that the brushroll end caps are in the correct
orientation (Diagram 3a inset)

IMPORTANT: Rotate brushroll manually to make sure belt is not twisted.
3. Reattach nozzle guard. Secure by locating the 3 tabs in the base slots and replace the screws (Diagram 1).

Brush doesn't work, red light is on says to see owners manual, belt is not broken.

The belt may have streached so that when pressure is applied to it the belt slips. The belt will not be broken just streached to far.

Belt is melting or burning not sure why

It doesn't matter what or why. Use your owners manual and it will show you how to change the belt. When you open it up whatever is hanging the brush roller up will either show itself or when you remove the brush roller it will fall out. Change the belt. That smell is the motor shaft slipping past the belt and burning it with friction. Either way the belt will need changing if it's had that much wear on it.

It smells like something is burning and then I saw smoke coming from the bottom, where the roller brush is.

That means that the belt is very worn and it is slipping on the motor. You need to replace the belt. Here is a link to the belts you need and a manual you can view with instructions:

New Eureka vacuum cleaner belt keeps slipping off

You may have a bad brush roll, part #61250-1, or the base itself has a problem and isn't letting the brush roll sit straight so it can be in alignment.
