My laptop has allways played music but tonight it will not

Sorry but is this a laptop or desktop? you have both in your listing!
One of a couple issues!
1) Sound card went bad.
2) Volume control is set too low?
3) lost the sound card driver -may need to reload the driver.
4) CD drive crashed! - does it

I purchased a plextor px-870a dvd/cd writer to replace the cd writer in our computor it is a dell with a dvd player in the top slot and a cd writer in the next slot down but the cd writer stoped working so...

On the back of a CD-writer or a DVD-writer is a small grid (2 rows) of gold pins.

Each vertical set of pins is labelled: MA(ster), SL(ave), and C(able)S(elect).
Be sure that one drive has a small jumper between the MA pins,
and the other drive has a small jumper between the SL pins.

Was there any software on CD-ROM that came with the DVD-writer,
e.g., software to play DVDs, and software to write CDs and DVDs?
To "play" a DVD, you'll need that software.
To "play" a music CD, Windows Media Player will suffice.

CD drive trying to play CD when drive is empty

Apparently your laptop still thinks there is a cd to play. Be sure you closed down all your programs. I am assuming that you already logged off and shut your computer down and restarted. It could be something as simple as your sensor that detects the cd being in place and just a little dust. Use some clean compressed air that comes in a can and can be bought like at Radio Shack or electronic supply house. Put the nozzle on and blow out any dust that may be in there. Power down and then restart your computer. That should take care of your problem.

sounds like you burned it as a mp3 which you can play on certain mp3 compatible audio devices but your hifi and cd player are not mp3 compatible you would need to burn the disk as audio disk

Playing Music

Hello,

Besure that the cd inserted is readable by your CD rom.

You can open your windows media player.
click file menu,
then click open. browse your CD drive and select all the musics files and then click ok.

click play.

If this not resolve then verify if your computer has a speaker, not mute the volume control. or the device controller is installed properly. (the audio driver)

may this help,

Do you have seperate DVD and CD drives?
Can you get sound when you play a CD on the CD drive?
If you answer yes to both of these questions, this might be your answer.

This applies to IDE drives, not to the new SATA.
In order for the sound to get from the player there is a cable that connects the drive to your sound card. This cable is probably connected to the CD. Move it to the DVD drive since the DVD drive will also play CDs.

Set sound

well the only way digital sound will work in the system is if the cd rom has a connecting wire from the digital plugin in the back of the drive to the motherboard or to an added sound card. if this is not hooked up it wont play true digital music. sheck that the connection is there i have had to change this in compaq and HP to get true quality sound for surround sound.

Sounds like the cd player is defective. Other data programs will take the data at what ever speed the cd will produce, within reason. does the speed change when playing music?
