I was trying to use my lifecam vx-3000 to record what was happening in my room when I wasn't there because I didn't quite trust my roommate.
Both times I left it running for about 4 hours. The first time, when I came back and hit the stop button, I was left with a 5.47 kb file that registers as a video with a duration of 0:00 seconds and was created at the time I stopped the camera. The second time the file had 138 kb and was a video 3 seconds long, also with a time modified of the time I stopped the camera.
I had about 50 gb of memory on my hard drive and I had the resolution set to only the second highest setting, so I shouldn't have run out of memory. An earlier time I had left it running for 3 hours and 15 minutes and it worked fine.
Can you think of anything I might be doing that would make it not record?

After loading the disk that came with the webcam you should have the LifeCam Dashboard software. You can use it to take videos, or just go to mailVU.com and record and send free videos from there. If you don't like those options you can always download another webcam picture/video software package. I like using the free version of Debut and downloaded it to my laptop.
The problem isn't your webcam, it is the software that is recording it. The software is separating the video stream and the audio stream. Look for a software package that records in Flash, which combines the streams.
