Over time, files and applications become scattered in various places on your hard disk. Disk Defragmenter brings these scattered pieces together to improve speed and help prevent errors.
1. Close all applications. Disable screen savers, anti-virus utilities and other constantly running programs.
2. Open the Start menu and choose Programs, then Accessories.
3. Click on System Tools.
4. Click on Disk Defragmenter.
5. When the Select Drive window appears, click on Settings.
6. Check both "Rearrange program files so my programs start faster" and "Check the drive for errors."
7. Click OK to defragment drive C: (the physical drive).
8. Run the program once a month or so.

1. Double click on My Computer
2. Select the Disk Drive (C)
3. Right click on the C:
4. Select the Properties
5. A window appears as the Tabs General, Tools, Hardware,     Sharing and Quota
6. Select the Tools Tab
7. Click the button of "Defragment Now"
8. Disk Defragmenter Window appears
9. Selec the drive and click on Defragment button
10. Wait until the messages displays as "defragmentation is Completed"
11. Restart the System
12. Defragment the drives for every 7 - 10 days
13. Your system performance increases by doing this

i use a program called smartdefrag, exe, its free on the net. it defrags in the background, is stable, runs on win32, and only starts when cpu usage under 20%.
it doesnt suffer from explorer writting to the drive and upsetting defrag, as MS defrag seems to.
give it a try, it uninstalls well too, if you dont like it.
it puts an icon to your taskbar, and is active from boot.

Well actually windows xp FSTP systems are not really neccassary to be defraged. It is not like the old system. I do it anyway and to me it does seem to help. But really it isn't suppose to be neccassary under the new system.
To do so right click on my computer and then on your drive and come down to properties and look up and click tools and under defrag run the program. You have to wait on it. But it is fairly fast.
