I just got new charger and batt for laptop anit seemed to work fine until I tried to defrag disk and half way thru ran out of batt and even though ac was pluged in it shut down. Now when I try to bootup it gets to the dell screen and 3/4 of the way thru the red batt light comes on and the computer shuts off. This is with 65% battery life according to the lights on the batt and the ac pluged in. Any help will be appreciated.

The charger may be bad. You need to measure the output voltage at the computer end of the cord with a voltmeter. Zero volts means bad unit, but may be just the plug end wires are broken near the plug (common problem). A repair shop might be able to fix it with a new plug. A new charger is outrageously expensive.
sounds like an unhappy hard drive..can you try F8 when it starts to boot, before the logo hits the screen, that takes it to SAFE mode. try the last known good configuation option, if it is there. otherwise, safe mode
