Check the freeware sites...there are tools that you might be able to use providing you install a bootable disk or another disk drive with your O/S on it. In addition.....if you have a a dos boot disk plus (preferably) a copy of Qdos (old but very valuable program) you can at least copy to your data to disks).....the combination of these tools along with the drivers (on the boot disk...or copy then to it for your CD....could give you what you are looking for...the time to do all this is 2-3 hours if you are new...alternatively there are dos commands you can use. Failing all that (perhaps you are not familiar enough with all mentioned) your best bet is to always....back up...back up....back up....drives have finite lives. Hope this helps. Tangoblue

No. You need the software on your harddrive to use your burner as well as other programs

The hard drive is where the operating system is stored. Thusly, if your hard drive fails, you wont be able to do anything with your comp until you (a) fix your hard drive or (b) get a new one and install your OS on it.

your system searches for os(not hd)if it does find os it reports no drive found (default)
remove hd check for dust/debris on connections and connecter.replace hd.restart with os disk in drive, system say press any key to boot from cd,press any key.
choose install windows, next screen select delete partition , create new partition , format install

I'm sorry to hear your HDD is dead. However, all is not lost. You can still use your computer and even burn CD's and browse the internet without a functioning HDD! There is a thing called a "BootCD" or "Live CD".

My favorite non-technical one is called "Ubuntu LiveCD" Here is a link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Good luck and have fun!

Boot to knoppix, or a bootable windows CD, and you can burn files to a CD using Deep burner (Google for it) froma pin drive.
I have used this to get files off of drives that are going, but not yet gone.
Good luck

What do you men bypass your hard drive? Your hard drive stores the operating system. You can't do any of those things without the operating system. Unless you get a linux version that can boot off a cd, but thats a temperary solution.

You need to get another hard drive.

Well, you could, sort of
If you had two CD drives, you could even boot off Knoppix and then use a thumb drive or something, sort of tricky though.

Yes there is !

Download a live linux. This assumes that you have an additional drive to burn with but you can have a decent to exceptional experience computing without a hard drive. I would try mepis linux it seems to be the most hardware and user friendly.

http://www.mepis.org

boot from the mepis disk with your internet cable plugged in and you will be online when you hit the desktop.

use demo and demo as the login and password.

That is your "quick" fix.

If you are bored sometime compile your own bartpe disc i am not going to get into it now but google "reatogo" if you want the windows version of this fix.
