I have a LiftMaster Model #1060-1 (1/2 HP) chain drive garage door opener that has the same problem. I opened the door part way up and I stopped it with the remote so I could close it before it reached full open. When I pushed the button again to close it it started going up again so I stopped it with the remote it stopped and the motor just started humming with no movement of the door. I had to unplug the power to it and release the trolley so I could close it manually. I am a master auto mechanic, so I checked it out the nylon gears were not stripped out. All teeth are good. I remove the motor and found it was tight to turn. I hooked it up to a power cord  and it still only hums when I apply power to the motor. I sprayed it with penetrating oil at the two bearings on the shaft of the motor and it turns more freely now but still only hums. I talked to my door opener man today to see if he had a new motor for it. He told me he has never replaced a defective motor on a door opener in over 30 years. I am going to take the motor for him to check, this Wednesday, 1-7-09. It might be the motor starter capacitor that is blown out. It might need to have the capacitor to give the motor a "Kick Start" to get it turning when it initially starts the motor turning. If you think I am going in the right direction please let me know. Thanks, John downundertech@sbcglobal.net

I tried the capacitor. It was not the problem. The circuit board was burned out. My GDO tech showed me the burnt spot in it (brown spot in the green circuit board). It was very evident that was the problem. I bought a new GDO that has the safety sensors at the bottom of the door that I like much better. Thanks for your help.

I have had same problem. Replacing the motor start capacitor fixed it. Capacitors can go bad in an instant when they get old, particularly if they are perturbed while servicing other parts.

The Capacitor is a 53-64 MFD 220 VAC. A bad capacitor will cause what you are experiencing.

Door worked, 2 hours later didn't- just hummed good weather

If it just hums when a button is pressed it could be the start capacitor. This sits next to the motor and is about 5 inches long and about as big around as a silver dollar.

My garage door opener (liftmaster 1265) buzzes when attempting to open or close the door but the chain doesn't move

Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. Most likely stripped.

Liftmaster door opener, motor hums but chain and door does not move. Any ideas? Thanks

If the motor is running but the chain isn't moving you have a stripped drive gear. Remove the cover from the motor unit and check. It should be obvious.

Chamberlain 1265 garage door opener, tried to

On the side of the motor unit you will find the 'down limit control'. Using a small screwdriver turn this control in the same direction as the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking may be necessary to get it just right.

My door went down so far it flexed the bar and broke from the wal

You seem to have more than one issue.  Why did the bar flex in the first place?  If you have a Craftsman or Liftmaster operator, unplug the operator and remove the cover.  On the motor shaft, carefully, use a pair of pliers or vicegrips to turn the motor shaft in a direction to move the carriage away from the bolt.  This may not be the only problem, the gear assembly part # 41C4220A may need to be replaced.  I'm still wondering why the bar flexed in the first place?

Door opener will not engage as mechanism moves along the chain track

Make sure the rope hanging down has not been pulled. If it has the door has been disengaged from the opener. You can correct this by flipping the metal part up (that the rope is connectd to) toward the drive track. Then open or close the door using the remote. The track should grab the door again.

Liftmaster security + model 1265 NOT CLOSING PROPERLY

wbuero, I had same problem two weeks. The door springs weaken over time and may need to be tightened - check opening force manually. Manufacturer also recommended reviewing install guide to be sure opener arm is attached at proper angle. The opener on my professionally installed door was not connected properly. It that doesn't work, the opener drive train or door track/wheels may need maintenence.
