Changing swrs open and close door changes tried running a ground to different places didn't change

If the SWR changes by opening and closing the door, I would suggest to check the grounding, although you have already done this.
However, a slight difference noticeable can be normal.
Is the antenna cable in tact ? Is there corrossion on the base mount ? Is the antenna placed on the vehicle over a magnetic base or fixed to the chassis ? Check the ground connection on the PL259 both sides, the antenna and the rig.
The position of the antenna and it's grounding is also important.

fiberglass,no ground plane. Did you use the meters on the radios to match your antennas or a seperate external antenna.you might have to run your own coax and hook up a mirror mount bracket and put your favorite antennas on them then match them and ground them to the chassis use common sense to show you what to do next and you should be getting out great. Sometimes people change the antennas on those trucks with built in antennas and don't realize that the coax has just fallen out of site into the body somewhere. thats why I said install your own.

How do i cut a cb anntena to calabrate it?


If the antenna was designed to be used on the CB band, you should NEVER have to cut it. Calibration is a matter of moving the rod up and down in the post above the coil. There is a set screw that you loosen to accomplish this. Check the SWRs after each adjustment, and adjust until the SWRs at channel 40 and channel 1 are about the same.

If it's a 1/4-wave wip, you get what you get, there are no adjustments.

If you can't adjust it properly using this method, then you have some other problem; bad/poor ground and/or ground plane, bad coax, etc.

NEVER CUT (TRIM) AN ANTENNA THAT WAS DESIGNED FOR CB USE! Period! If it can't be tuned, you either have a faulty antenna, or some other problem. You need to find the problem and fix it, not mess with trimming the antenna...

Your SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) is 1.5 this is acceptable. Now your radio comes with a 2SC2290 final transistor. This produces 50 watts PEP (Peak Envelope Power) But you say you are getting 4 or 5 miles. You should be getting FAR more than this. So this hum could be your problem. What your hearing is a ground loop. Yes, this big of a radio you should run strait to the battery and I would put a 15 watt fuse inline on both the ground wire and positive wire within the first foot of your battery post. A blade fuse and holder is fine. This is what I use. Next get yourself a copper braid strap and ground the radio a second time. Install the braid strap from the radio to a bolt on the passenger side floor board or any other suitable place but make sure it bolts down tight. This is the proper way to install this radio and it should also fix the hum. You may also need to address the microphone if it is still humming but I think this will take care of you.

I have a Uniden PRO510XL radio and a 48" single


then the antenna needs to be moved. antennas have to have a ground plane to get correct swr below 3... or there may be a bad ground. try moving antenna @ different angles to see if it changes swr's or even opening the door away or closer to the body will make it change. also check the insulator it should be on top. call if you need help

When I key the microphone the diesel engine rpm drops


Usually when you hear engine static through your radio it very seldom is the ground causing it,If it were me (which it has been many times) I would try to find a place on the fuse panel to hook up the positive wire what you need to do is get the positive as far away from a direct alternater connection,like direct to battery,light switch or even sometimes a cigarette lighter will give you static you want to stay away from these if you can.Most electronic shops will sell a noise filter for about the same price it would cost to make one.One of the best ways I've also found to quiet the static down is to tap into your car radio hot wire as long as your c.b. is not a high power radio you should be able to get away with it only make sure you change the fuse to a higher rate like from a 5 amp to a 10 amp and so on. SWR calibration waaay off the chart


You are using an inline swr meter to set your swr right, not looking at the meter on the radio? Here is the process to set swr on an antenna:

You must have an inline swr meter, which can be purchased online or from a truck stop. The ones at truck stops are cheap ones, but will do the trick for the most part.

You connect your antenna 18ft coax to the antenna plug of the swr meter, and a jumper coax (any length) to the transmitter plug of the swr meter and then to the radio.

Close all doors and make sure no one is messing around with the vehicle or antenna. You must be set up as you would normally be transmitting.

Now set your cb radio to channel 40 and your swr meter to fwd. Key up your microphone1.gif and at the same time turn the set knob on the swr meter until the needle is at the line that reads set. Unkey your mic and set the the swr meter to ref. Key up again and note what your reading is. Now leave the swr meter in ref and turn the cb to channel 1. Key up and take your reading. If the reading on ch 1 is higher than ch 40 you must raise the stinger on your antenna. If ch 1 is lower than 40, you lower your stinger. You are trying to get lower than a reading of 3 and as close to 1.5 as possible. If you lower your stinger as far into the antenna as it will go and you need it shorter, you cut the bottom of your stinger no more than 1/2" at a time, and recheck your swr reading after each cut.

Once you have gotten the best reading you can, connect your antenna directly back to the radio.

The setting of your swrs is to make your antenna as efficient as possible, by trying to get it as close as you can to a 50ohm impedance. THE ONLY PART OF YOUR SYSTEM THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR SWR IS YOUR ANTENNA, not your coax and not your radio. Your radio and coax can give you false readings, but only the antenna can actually change the swr.

On the swr meter, the fwd/ref switch stands for forward (power that is being transmitted out) and reflected (power that is reflected back into the radio.

Just for information sake, the swr cal switch on your radio is used to set the meter to reflect the swr that your antenna is set at. The meter on your radio is like a dummy light on your car. ONCE AGAIN, YOU CAN NOT SET YOUR SWR ON YOUR RADIO, only the antenna.

Checking and setting the swr can only be accomplished with an inline swr meter, not with the radios swr cal switch and the radios meter. Once you have set the swr of the antenna, you cal the radios meter to reflect the actual swr reading and use it like a dummy light on a car, just as an indicator of high swrs. To set your swr:

Thoroughly check your antenna connection, be certain the plastic grommet is in place (and not cracked) between the bottom of the antenna adaptor stud and your antenna mount, and check for corrosion in and around your antenna connections. If using a fiberglass antenna, check for cracked outer insulation. If a whip, be sure the Allen screws are tight and the antenna is getting a good connection. If you have a base-loaded whip antenna (Wilson 2000) make sure the base coil plastic case isn't cracked. If you find anything wrong, invest in a new antenna. If all that checks out, buy a new 18 foot piece of coax (around $20, or get the best quality you can afford) and run it to the antenna. You may have skinned the coaxial shielded outer insulation somewhere in the uninstall/install process, it only takes one tiny break to cause problems. Be sure not to run the coax through the door jamb or a window where it WILL be pinched and cause trouble, take time to run it under the dash and out a permanent vent access or through the firewall.
