The lens stays out. Will not retract. I turn off camera, took out the batteries, charged batteries. nothing works - every time I turn it on- it says lens error. Any ideas would be great!

This just happened to me today. The lens sort of goes in and out until it reads, lens error, restart camera-Restarting doesn't help either.

Mine had the same message. For a while I could fiddle with the camera and it would eventually pop the lens out. But finally, no dice.

I had a shop look at it. Henry's in Toronto. They said the lens gearing was probably broken (stripped?) and that the standard repair (out of warranty) would be something like CAD$200.

    I bought a DSLR instead.

I am also having this same problem which sucks bc i have come to love this camera so much...
My lens will not pop out at all and has the same message about lens error and to restart camera which surprises me cause i just used it the other day.

SOURCE: lens error

If you've recently dropped the camera you may have damaged the lens tube (housing) or jarred the zoom mechanism off of its track. Either one of those problems will require professional repair. If it hasn't suffered from a drop, your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may be to weak/worn to properly power the camera, or the camera may require professional repair.

Fujifilm finepix j38 series reads zoom error and wont take a pic.

If you have some skills, you can open the camera and cline your zoom lens with toothbrush and compressed air. Try to separate zoom lens from the electric motor. usually is 2 or 3 screws. You will see a lot of sand inside the camera and lens. And next time when you will go to the beach, you will take more care about your camera.
Solution 2, and more easy is to buy another zoom lens from ebay.Or another camera same model with broken LCD or other technical problem than zoom lens.

ERROR 99

Error 99 is a generic error in that the camera does not know what the exact error is. The usual fix for this error is ......

Turn the camera off and remove the battery.

Remove the lens and clean the electrical contacts on the rear of the lens with a soft dry cloth.

Refit the lens and the battery and switch back on. Hopefully all will be well again.

It's about $124 repair charge if your camera is out of warranty. I called Canon and the guy said to be sure the batteries are now wearing down (which I charged mine last night thinking that was the issue and it doesn't appear to be, however, I'm going to buy some new ones JUST to be sure), but other than that it would have to be serviced because it's something internal. The only place to have it serviced is in Illinois, so it's a send off, he said other Canon shops only service SLR's, not these little automatic ones. HTH...it really stinks to have my camera malfunction at the end of ball season!

Have a powershot sd550

After many complaints Canon posted this on their web site: "The E18 error code may be displayed if you apply pressure to the zoom lens, lens barrier or surrounding area when handling the camera. Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the zoom lens."
There is a lot you can try...
Here is a list of pages with help on the E18 issue:
