Trying to decide whether to buy a ge or maytag washing machine (top load ) looking for longer durability
I notive alot of transmissions go out in the maytag, is that also the case with ge models and others as well ?
I always check Consumers Reports ( see http://www.consumerreports.org/ ) Your local library should have a subscription to it.
An alternative is to use Google and search for words like: ge "washing machine" "top loader" complaints or maytag "washing machine" "top loader" complaints
If you don't see relevant web sites coming up, try replacing the word --> complaints with --> problems . Also, try adding the word --> transmission to search for issues specifically with transmissions.

Re: best washers ?
The larger capacity maytag with the larger gears in the transmission can break. the standard transmission on some of the ge are bad, the coupling breaks in the kenmore and whirlpool if you overload. I still like maytag the best and I have been in the appliance business 19+ years

the most likely cause if the oil looks like motor oil that you put in your car but only thicker,is that it is leaking from the transmission which is very common in ge washers the oil is in the transmission to lube the gears which make the machine agitate to be sure you could remove the front panel and would see alot of oil in the base frame to remove the panel place a screwdriver between the panel and top and feel around and find 2 clips (one on each side) press on those clips while pulling the panel out
It does seem that in your case it would be cheaper to by a new machine.but you can look up the parts if you want to at www.searspartsdirect.com and price them yourself.the motor runs about 130.00 dollars and the transmission if needed runs 253.82 dollars.the tubs run about 130.00 dollars each
That grinding noise your hearing is most likely the center bearing in a maytag they are usally very easy to break and mainly because when they make maytags they dont put the right type of grease on the bearing itself which causes the machines not to last the 10 years that we all think they could. This repair is honestly not worth the amount of money that it would cost to repair I've seen technicians price this job out between 450 as a low and 600 as a high and considering you can buy a brand new top loader for 2-400 it really isnt worth the effort in trying to resurect the machine. Please also note maytags are notorious for the center bearings disintergrating because of poor factory assembly. Sorry about the bad news. when looking for a new washer if your going with a top loader stick to the whirlpool there easy to fix cheap for parts and last alot longer. Please remember to rank this opinion and if i can answer any further questions please message me back. Thanks again (p.s. on whirlpool make sure if you buy a new one you ask if the drive couple has metal around the shaft dont get the plastic one they let go in two years and then techs charge 180 bucks to repair a 6 dollar part)
This machine uses an auto-adjust for the back portion and they tend to get stuck. Since it sits on a common chassis, insert two standard legs in the back. There are threaded holes that the legs go in. Rebalance the machine. Your problem should stop.
