How to format a disk

Instructions
  1. Formatting and Installing from the Windows XP CD
    • 1 This section explains how to reformat a drive from the Windows XP installation CD. This can be used when installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a computer. Here it is especially important to backup all of your important information because upon formatting you will lose EVERYTHING that used to be on the drive. This includes all applications and device drivers, so you must back up everything you can.
    • 2 Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your CD drive (Home or Pro--it does not matter).
    • 3 Now as you computer boots a little more it will say "Press any key to boot from CD.." press a key to do so.
    • 4 The CD will load up a blue screen and then spend a while loading files it needs. When it is finished it will list a few options, mainly "Press ENTER to set up Windows XP." Press Enter or Return.
    • 5 Now you will be at a screen to select where to install Windows to. This is where you can delete old partitions and format drives. The box in the bottom half of the screen shows all your drives and the partitions that exist on them. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight your "C:" partition and press the 'D' key (if all that shows up is "Unpartitioned space" and you have no C: or D: partitions, skip this step). On the next screen press the 'L' key to finalize deleting the partition.
    • 6 Now you are back on the screen to choose where to install Windows. The box on the lower half of the screen should no longer show a partition but simply have an entry "Unpartitioned space xxxxxMB." Select this with the arrow keys and press the 'C' key to create a partition on the drive. The next screen tells you the minimum and maximum sizes the partition can be and lets you pick the size. The default size is the maximum, but double check that the number entered is the maximum and hit enter.
    • 7 Now you will again be back at the choose where to install Windows screen. But this time you will have a partition that looks something like this "C: Partition1 [New (Raw)]xxxxxxMB." Highlight this entry and press enter.
    • 8 The next screen lets you choose which file system to format the drive with. Choose NTFS as it is faster and more secure. If the drive is brand new and has never been used before then use one of the options that ends in "(Quick)." Or, choose one of the lower down options. Use the arrow keys to select the proper one and press Enter or Return.
    • 9 From here you are all set and the installation of Windows will proceed starting with a format of your drive. This will take a while (over half an hour) so you can take a little break.

Cd rom. on comp. dont work can idown load software on line somehow

Spend about $35 to purchase a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer.

Or, take a USB memory-stick, and the product CD/DVD disk, to another computer.
Copy all the files from the media onto the memory-stick.

On your computer, use the files on the memory-stick to install the software.

Hi i need help with my sons notebook it is a hp probook 4310s when i turn the comp on it says NTLDR is missing and says press ctrl+alt+del to restart when that is done a black screen comes up with...

First, check the boot drives to make sure that the computer is not trying to boot from a different drive to the one that contains Windows.
Check that there are no CDs or DVDs 3 1/2 inch floppy in the CD/DVD drives.your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd-rom then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

How can I fix Fdc failure when I switch on my Dell L866r desktop computer. I ask somebody to re booth my comp. after it was done this problem occur. Also how can I improve performance of my comp. Too slow.

hello, FDC error ( FDC Failure) is usually either improper floppy drive setup - check cablesare connected properly on the motherboard and and in to the floppy drive-inserted all the way in, not in reverse. insure that power cable in connected properly.
Bad controller on motherboard: not much you can do with that but go in BIOS and disable the floppy controller and make sure first boot device is set to hard drive or cd/dvd drive instead of floppy.

As far as performance is concerned your system only has 128 MB ram, i would suggest adding some more. Try crucial.com or ebay for good price should about 15$ 20$ for another 256mb or so.
Go tosystem tools and run disk defragger tool to defrag your hard drive.
download free tool called "tune Xp" and use defrag boot files.
go to start run and type in "msconfig", hit enter
in new open windows click on "startup" tab and uncheck all the application that you don't use everytime your computer starts.
NOTE: Make sure not to uncheck any anti-virus/spyware/firewall software you may have installed.
don't worry you are not deleting anything but just removing things from startup to speed up startup process.
system will require reboot at the end.

i hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
good luck

Amar Sondhi

Can't install vista

You need to find the drivers for the controller card.

Put the drivers onto a floppy drive. When the software asks for the drivers, use those drivers to let the OS know where to look for the hard drives.

I'm not sure if vista can load drivers off of a USB thumb drive. I havn't actually tried it yet.

Check Maxtor for the drivers you need.

About harddisk

If this is a newer system, this issue is the XP CD you are using doesn't have the needed hard drive controller driver it needs to see the Hard Drive.

Because this is Windows XP, you have only 2 options to resolve the issue. XP will only load a controller driver during install from one of 2 locations. Either a floppy diskette drive or from the XP Cd itself. XP has controller drivers for most systems available at the time the CD was burned, but newer systems, especially ones with SATA hard drives do not have supported drivers in XP CD images. You options are as follows:
  1. Connect a USB Floppy Diskette drive to the system, download the needed driver (If one is available) copy the extracted driver files to the root directory of a floppy diskette and put the diskette in the Floppy drive, then boot the XP CD again. The driver should load automatically if the floppy is in A: Drive when you boot to the CD.
  2. The second option requires slipstreaming the driver (Same one downloaded to a floppy in 1) into the XP image. (This takes a good bit of knowledge in bootable cd creation)
If all this seems to be quite the hassle, then install Vista,

Booting and dvd drive not detected

i'm not sure if your pc has a floppy drive, but if it does, then get a win 98 or win ME startup disk then power up and then push the F8 key (or DELETE key) to enter BIOS setup then select boot floppy then and insert into slot then reboot then boot minimal then get to c: drive and run CHKDSK/FIX then try again, w/out floppy. if no-go then repeat back to c: drive and delete the PAGEFILE.SYS file (may need to attribute the file to allow delete) then reboot w/out floppy

Floppy

I'm assuming this is on a PC. If so, inserting a floppy will not cause the PC to do anything. (The reasons for this are historical and not important to solving your problem.) You need to open "My Computer", then browse to your A: drive to see the files on the floppy. A handy shortcut to My Computer is to press Windows+E. (Like Ctrl+E, but using the key with the Windows logo on it instead of the Ctrl key.)
