No. But you need to be careful about what hard drive you install. There are a few models that will not work with the PS3. Thanks.

What do i do when it says hard disc system is corrupted on my ps3

Ok try to follow these steps in order to restore your hard disks structure again.

Step 1. Turn the PS3 off into standby mode (red light on)

Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, then beep again 5 seconds later and then beep once more and turn off. When the console turns off, release the power button.

Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, then beep 5 seconds later, then there will be 2 quick beeps together. When you hear these 2 quick beeps release the power button.

Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to connect a PS3 connector via USB and press the PS button. Do this and then go onto the next step.

Step 5. A menu will then load. Choose option 3 "Restore File System". The PS3 will restart and may report that your hard drive is corrupt, ignore this and click on "OK" to continue. Let the PS3 do its thing and hopefully when it restarts all will be well again.

If this procedure does not work, follow steps 1-4 again but on step 5 choose option 4. If this does not work try again but with option 5.

If none of these procedures work then I am afraid it looks like your hard drive may have become faulty. This will mean you will have to purchase a new one.

I hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

Playstation 3 message "hard disc file system is corrupted..."

Your hard drive may have gone bad. Maybe try using a different hard drive. Once you put it in, the system data should install itself.

My ps3 has a "hard disc been corrupted needs reboot now" press x to reboot. I did all that but wont reboot but say the same thing over again

You have a damaged or corrupted hard drive. try researching for a fix on the internet. If that doesn't work then you'll need to get a new SATA hard drive for it, install it and power the ps3 back up to format the new hard drive and the old one could possibly be used with an enclosure as an external hard drive for your computer.

I just put a new 80gb hard drive in my ps3. it turns on with green light but blank screen and wont take disc. Please help.

Okay what drive was in there before ifit was a 60 GB this might not work! You need other parts if you trying to install a bigger drive or you need to install the exact same drive that came out of there.

I hope this helps.

Upgrading PS3 HDD

You can upgrade the hard drive to a bigger one just as long as it's the same physical size as the original one. The 40GB PS3 is technically capable of backwards compatibility. It's just that Sony's OS doesn't support it on that model (maybe, there will be a firmware update that will allow it in the future). If you install Linux on the PS3 (which Sony officially allows you to do), then you can install the PS1 emulator (it's called ePSXe) and the PS2 emulator (it's called PCSX2). Both of them are free to download for Linux. The only thing that won't make the 40GB model the same as the 80GB is the finish of the console, lack of built-in memory card reader, lack of built-in WiFi, and only 2 USB ports. But those aren't neccesary.

Will not allow us to play the disc installed in the ps3 console

Unless this is a game you "installed" from the online store, then all other PS3 games require the disc in to play.

With the disc in the system, go to the Game heading in the menu. You should see a disc icon with the name of your click it. If you do not see the image, you will probably see text that says "disc read error". In this case you need to either clean the disc, or replace the disc with a non-scratched or non-defective one.

If your PS3 does this with multiple non-defective discs, then your blu-ray drive may be defective.

PS3 update problems

Ok, no matter how you try to install the firmware it will always write it to the hard drive first before install. Now if it gives you the 800 error while downloading it's your hard drive and it may need to be re-formatted or replaced. If you get an error during installation, then therewas a misplaced piece of code during the download and it needs to be downloaded again.

BTW, the power button default reset is ONLY for the Video output settings.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy gaming!!

Buying bigger hard drive?

it is the difference in the consoles not the size of the hard drive.. the size of the hard drive is just an indicator between the different versions of the ps3

Hard disc file corrupted-how do you repair?

you need a new hard drive. this will void your warranty but you can replace your original hard drive with another one of the same type (IDE / SATA) and all you should have to do is pop in the drive and it will ask to reformat the drive, say yes and let it go. then you can start playing your games again. if that dosn't work then your firmware is corrupt/damaged and you will need a new ps3. just take the hard disk out and use it in your computer or sell it on ebay. other than that, keep the busted ps3 for spare parts in case the 'new' one needs a new bluray drive in the somewhat near future.

From what I can tell you have 3 options;

1. Return it to the store for a new one (depends on warranty and purchase date)

2. If you have been surfing with it you might have a virus and need to do a scan (hard to do since you can't really access your hard drive)

3. Hard drive is corrupt (forget virus scan and swap hard drive with a new, bigger, better one)

I would go for option one. If not, try option 3.

Link for changing hard drive;
