Question about Washing Machines

Open Question

The Tub in my machine is off balance

When my washing cycle hits the spin cycle it made the thumping your load is off balance sound and so i adjusted the load and it still made the sound. Even with no clothes in it there was the sound. The tub itself is leaning to the left and will not shift back to center when I pull it over there. I need to know how to adjust it back to center.

Thank you

I think I have a similar problem with my Kenmore 80 series washer. The tub is off center. It leans to the front right of the maching. I do not have any wash or spin issues. It has been like this for the past few years. Looking under the machine I cannot tell why it leans. I read in other forums that the springs that balance the tub could wear out, but this seems strange.

Sounds like your front to back spring is pulling to tight, sometimes you need to replace it and sometimes you can take it off and stretch it. hope this helps

SOURCE: tub out of balance

Assuming the machine is level I would first push the wash basket to the right rear corner while holding it there look to see if the spring on the left front corner is connected, if not reconnect it if its gone order a new one. Hope this helps

SOURCE: ge adora top load tub leans to one side, but works

There are 4 suspension rods that hang the outre tup from the top frame. One is the came off during the off balance load. Easy to put back on...Remove the front panel by inserting a putty knife where the top of the machine and the front panel meet inline with the lid opening while pulling towards you. You will then be able to see the front rods. The back two are harder to see but hopefully it is only one of the front rods that needs to be reset. When you see it and compare to one of the ones that didn't come loose, it will be obvious how it is attaches.

Sounds like one of the balancing springs either broke or came off.

Balancing problems with the spin cycle

Redistribute clothes in the tub. It may take several tries. If this doesn't resolve try it with just water and no clothes load. Still doesnt resolve, there may be an issue at the upper bearing load carrying or bearing adjustment surface. A slim possibility there is something under the spinner tub, but that would interfere with the tub reaching spinout speed.

This model of washer does not have an out of balance cut off switch. If the load is not balanced properly the tub could hit the cabinet sides. If the unit spins evenly while empty & out of balance while loaded, I recommend checking & balancing the load. If the basket spins out of balance while empty, I recommend having the suspension springs & balance ring checked. Be sure not to wash light fabric with heavy fabric clothes. Also ensure that the adjustable feet are level, that's most important.

I have a zanussi washer/dryer but lately its making so much noise !! its driving me nuts please tell me what it could be ?? thanks

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. If your washer is a front load washer then check these things if it is making noise--
Bellows
The bellows is a rubber sleeve that seals the suspended outer tub to the stationary cabinet front at the tub opening. Its purpose is to provide a water tight opening into the tub that can be sealed by the cabinet door, yet allow flexibility for the oscillation of the tub during the wash and spin cycles.
Outer Tub Assembly
The outer tub assembly is supported by two suspension springs and stabilized by two air shock assemblies. A cement counter weight is mounted to the front of the outer tub by screws. A counterweight is molded into the rear half of the outer tub. These counterweights prevent excessive oscillation of the entire suspended assembly during an unbalanced spin cycle.
Spin Basket Assembly
The spin basket is constructed of stainless steel. The circumference of the basket is perforated to allow water to flow through it as it revolves. A heavy steel shaft is pressed into the spin basket support which is then bolted to the basket. The spin basket assembly is entirely supported by two ball bearings pressed into the rear of the outer tub. A large drive pulley is mounted to the free end of the shaft that extends through the rear of the outer tub. There are three plastic vanes mounted to the spin basket to aid in the washing action during the wash cycle. The rotation of the spin basket provides both the washing action during the wash cycle, and water extraction during the spin cycle.

High pitch "jet engine" noise--A certain amount of motor whine is normal during the spin cycle.

Rattling and clanking noise--
• Foreign objects such as coins or safety pins may be in drum or pump. Stop washer and check drum. If noise continues after washer is restarted, objects may be in pump.
• Belt buckles and metal fasteners are hitting wash drum. To prevent unnecessary noise and damage to drum, fasten fasteners and turn items inside out.

Squealing sound or hot rubber odor-- Washer is overloaded. Do not overload washer. Stop washer and reduce load.

Thumping sound— Heavy wash loads may produce a thumping sound. This is usually normal. If sound continues, washer is probably out of balance. Stop washer and redistribute wash load.

Vibrating noise--
• Washer is not resting firmly on floor. Move washer so it rests firmly on floor. Adjust leveling legs. NOTE: Some shaking of the washer is normal without moving across the floor. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for details.
• Shipping bolts and foam blocks have not been removed during installation. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for removing shipping bolts and foam blocks.
• Wash load unevenly distributed in drum. Stop washer and rearrange wash load.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

Tub rotates CW during agitation, out of balance, hits side of metal cabinet, but no error code

Hello srcoray,

Did you replace the clutch, just trying to get a feel for your hands on experience with the machine? If you did the work did your machine use the upper roller clutch bearing along with the clutch pulley mounted roller clutch bearing?

The FAV6800AW uses a reversing motor and motor controller that powers the motor and clutch pulley to rotate CW in Wash/Agitate cycle and CCW in Spin Cycle.

In Wash/Agitate cycle the roller clutch bearing should rotate freely CW allowing the agitator shaft to drive the transmission in wash cycle driving the tumblers to rotate only not the wash basket. In spin cycle the roller clutch bearing will lock up (one-way roller clutch bearing) driving the spinner shaft to rotate the wash basket and transmission CCW. Unless my thinking is wrong it sounds like the one way roller clutch bearing is frozen or dragging and not rotating freely in wash cycle rotating the wash basket CW. I’m an owner like you and will try to help.

Just a few other questions;

If you have a load of wet clothes in the wash basket and you select Spin Only cycle will the spin cycle complete with out dc/UC errors?

With the lid raised can you rotate the wash basket CW? It should not; it should only rotate CCW and do that with very little resistance.

Rich

Pounding noise after wash and final spin

  • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.
