Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Western Digital external HD which I use for backing up our family computers. This last weekend it has decided to fail. The HD connects to my computer via USB but when I do the computer gives no indication that any device has been connected nor can I see any additional drives in My Computer. The Blue light on the WD HD flashes although it doesn’t seem as bright as before. Regards Mike Lilliman

You can check the voltage coming from the power supply to the drive and confirm that it is correct and you can also switch USB cables and ports but likly , you could be correct. The HD may have just failed.

IT appears that the HD is dead
Take it to an IT repair shop and have it checked out
If that is the case , replace it with a sshd unit as there is no moving parts like you have now to wear out
it powers up faster as well

Buy a new external hd enclosure and reuse the hd from the failed enclosure. Hard drive enclosers are cheap BTW. Try newegg!

Connecting WD Passport external HD with Belkin N+ router

I had this same issue. Found it to be a sequencing issue. Plug the USB into the router with the power off to the HDD. Power on the HDD and you should be able to get to it fine. Also make sure you have the latest firmware on the router.

Western digital external hard drive ,flashing green light when connected to the pc , stable when not connected , pc does not reconise hd , but picks it up in the bios

I take it that you are using USB 2.0, if so try another port preferably one at the back of the computer. Also check if the drive is present in MyComputer - Properties - Manage - Disk Management. If it, is make sure that it has a drive letter assigned to it.

Western Digital Elements HD doing a clicking noise and no access

It might be the power adapter. I had one of these and two Maxtor external drives that just clicked that way and it turned out their adapters were bad. You can check with another adapter if you can borrow one from another drive, or use a replacement from Radio Shack. Make sure you get the same voltage and current rating marked on the original.

If the adapter isn't at fault, the small circuit board in the enclosure may be the trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and connect it to directly to a computer power supply to see if spins up properly.

If the drive still doesn't spin, it's bad. This is a common way for a drive to fail. Unfortunately, this leaves you with a drive that you can't read. Hopefully you've backed your important data up on CD or DVD.

I would suggest the external casing of the harddisk that contains its power supply is busted, so you need to change the casing or remive the harddisk from the casing and connect in inside

If you are using a pre-Windows xp system you may need to install specific drivers for your HD. If you run xp or Vista Try disconnecting completely the power cable from your computer for five minutes and then plug it back to the power and restart it. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes usb mass storage devices suffer troubles caused by electrostatic charges.
