In most of the cases the mic amplification is turned OFF due to which it does not work the way it should. In the control panel go to sound and then to Recording and then select your mic and then click on Properties and then go to level and then increase it so that the other person can hear it.
Make sure your webcam mic is set as the default mic Plug in the webcam

To set required (webcam) mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties" In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click 'OK' Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later) Return to "Recording". are you on a desktop or laptop? if on a desktop sometimes there are multiple places to plug in your mic, make sure you have not only plugged it in the right port, AND checked to see how high your mic sensitivity is on the software side.
on skype, click TOOLS, OPTIONS, Audio settings and talk, if you see the green power meter lighting up then make sure to slide the sensitivity up, or check and uncheck the auto feature, depending on where you had it try this and see what you get. Also turn donw your speakers as if your speakers are getting a feedback loop or are hearing the other people talk louder than it can hear you then it wont work either.
Play some sound file (song etc.) in your computer. If it sounds perfect then the problem is from the other side. ie. "the sound is all distorted" because the microphone is not properly handled by the person you are talking to or probably their mic is faulty.
is your microphonw working?
you may have to test that it works. it depends on what operating sytem you are using but you can usually do this from the control panel.
click start - click control panel -click hardware and sound-click manage sound devices-click record setting-try talking and watch to see if it detects your voice.if it doesnt you may have tto reinstall the driver. if it does work . then the issue might be with the im you are using . if you are using msn messager there is a help menu showing you hoe to test your mic.
It is an easy fix on Skype, I am assuming that is the program you are using for video conferencing. If not you will have to do just about the same thing to correct it. In Skype go to the tools selection on the top bar, select options from the menu, select audio settings and use the drop down selection list and change the source to the USB Mic on the camera from the current selection. You should be able to hear them once this is done. In other programs you need to do just about the same thing since windows uses the default mic. plug in the back of the computer. You just have to change it to the correct source for the mic. Good Luck, RAC
