Trying to disassemble a Gateway Laptop

Trying to disassemble a Gateway 7210 Laptop. There are hidden screws under the hinges of the screen but I cannot see how to get at them?

I need a service manual for a 7210GX so I can disassemble it so that I can replace the power supply jack.

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2009

I need to replace the power jack. Is it on the motherboard to the point I would have to replace the whole board? Do you know where I can get a print of how it is imbedded in the computer? A specs manual?

    Thanks,

I found there are plastic clips on the hinges that pop off and from there the face plate comes off. All better now

I replace the screen on my gateaway mt 6916 and cant install the video controler driver

Instructions

1

Prepare the laptop for disassembly. Shut down the laptop completely, then wait a few minutes before removing the battery and unplugging the AC adapter. Turn the laptop over and lay it down on a flat surface so that the battery area is facing away from you and the hard drive is located at the bottom left corner.
2

Remove the hard drive cover. Remove the two screws located on the left side of the hard drive cover, then lift the cover to remove it completely from the unit.
3

Remove the memory cover. Unscrew the eight screws holding the memory board in place; this cover is located above the Gateway product sticker.
4

Disconnect the Wi-Fi adaptor. Remove the Wi-Fi cover by unscrewing the single screw holding the Wi-Fi adapter in place; this is located directly above the hard drive. Remove the two cables connecting the wireless card to the adapter and snap the card out of the holder.
5

Remove the memory modules. Gateway computers typically have two memory modules located in the center of the motherboard; lift these out gently with your fingers and set them aside.
6

Release the heat sink. Unscrew the four screws around the heat sink assembly; this unit is located to the left of the ventilation fan and is surrounded by a copper base. Carefully lift the heat sink and the cooling fan off the unit and unplug the cable attaching it.
7

Remove the CD/DVD drive. Unscrew the small screw located to the left of the CD/DVD drive, then push the drive out to remove it from the laptop completely.
8

Remove all screws around the base of the laptop. You will now be left with a total of 18 screws located around the edge of the base of the laptop, and in between the stickers and hardware components in the center. Remove all of these carefully and set aside in a safe place.
9

Prepare the cover for removal. Turn the laptop up on its edge so that the back of the laptop is facing you; you will see two screws on the hinges of the computer. Unscrew these and set them aside.
10

Remove the hinge cover. Open the laptop so that the screen is laying flat; use the flathead screwdriver to pry open the hinge cover and pull it off gently with your fingers.
11

Remove the keyboard. Lift up the keyboard and reach behind it to release the cable. You will need to tug gently on the cable to unhook it from the motherboard.
12

Unhook the LCD screen from the notebook. Unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables located on the right side of the motherboard directly under the screen, then unplug the video cable located directly under the hinge cover. Remove the pair of screws located to the left and right of the LCD screen and gently lift the LCD screen off the notebook's base unit.
13

Remove the system board. Turn the base unit over and unscrew the five screws securing the motherboard to the base. Two of these are located near the hinge cover, and two are located beneath and to the right of the hard drive unit. The fifth is located a few inches below the top right edge of the laptop.
14

Disconnect the motherboard. Lift the system board, then unhook the cable connecting it to the base unit.

How can I open the case of gateway solo 2150? I

There is some information on FixYa for this already which can be found at the post below. Generally with a laptop, you'll have some hidden screws under a bezel on the top of the keyboard area. You gently pop this off with a small screwdriver and underneath will be the screws that hold the keyboard in. After removing these, you generally can disassemble the rest of the laptop.

The left hinge on my MX6436 gateway laptop is cracked. How can I fix it?It is split from the screw in the back out to one side and making it difficult to open and close.

If you have to ask "HOW" to disassemble your laptop, in order to remove and replace the hinge, then STOP, and take the computer to a qualified technician, who can safely make the repair.

Unable to remove Gateway m680 Laptop LCD Bezel

I would try just using a little bit more force (not too much!) the bezel will have clips around it to keep it in place along with the screws under the rubber protectors. Also make sure that the bezel doesn't hook in to the hinge cover in any way, as this will prevent it from coming off properly. If it does then pop the hinge covers off before continuing.

Gateway left hinge broke

Definately an easy fix.

I suggest looking on eBay for a donor chassis.
Sometimes they can be had relatively cheap CLICK HERE (this one has both hinges broken however) - and sometimes just the parts you are looking for are available CLICK HERE (this is for the RHS one though).

An entire donor PC is adviseable, because usually the repair is not just the hinge that broke - as the rest of the lid is plastic!

Once the trim above the keyboard is pried off, you will see the monitor cable, and hinge screws.

The trim around the monitor must be dis-assembled and pried into 2 parts.
Then the hinge & Support are either screwed into the side of the screen, or the back of the lid.

Most look like this...

Replace reverse of removal.

HERE is a link that will describe it better and give you a visual reference.

Once the screen is free of the chassis - its time to remove the little rubber scerw covers in the lid, and disassemble.

Good Luck!! Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

Opening a Gateway Solo 2150 laptop

I found the answer on another wed site. I tried it on my Gateway Solo 1500 and it works! The extra screws are hidden on top. You carefully remove the small face plate around the power button. I used a very small screw drive to lift it off.

I'm also an A+ certified tech, but I've done notebook service for a lot of years. I just finished opening up a Gateway Solo 1400 and it was NOT easy! There are no screws holding the keyboard on the bottom of the machine. You can get the case open about 95% and there will be one area stuck, in the back near where the screen cable goes into the unit. There is a hidden screw on the top of the case next to the hinge. To get to it, you have to remove the two screws that hold the plastic hinge cover and pry off the cover. I only managed to find it after removing the keyboard, the display, and the panel with the LEDs and power button. (The screws holding the keyboard are on the top of the machine, underneath the cover with the power button on it.)

Need to disassemble gateway 8708 laptop to replace the lcd panel

If u've never opened one before, it is very complicated, be very gentle.
Different size screws for areas of laptop. After screws removed, the keyboard and shield have to be removed to get to the screen connectors and hinge screws.
If u don't mind taking a chance in destroying ur laptop. try it and learn. The laptop is assembled in layers.
Be careful and good luck.
