Drive crashed and is showing unallocated space

I need to get the data off this drive. Believe it became currupt from software that got installed. The drive doesn't show up in explorer but does in bios and in device manager. The drive comes up with the whole thing as being unallocated. Does anyone know how to retrieve data off of a drive in this condition. once i get the data i need i will reformat and reinstall. Just very important that i get some of the info first. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can use a program like Data Recovery Wizard which is able to recover the file system and files of a partition which has been reformatted. I believe they have a trial you can download that may do the job.

Otherwise the program costs several hundred dollars, and it would be better to take it to a PC shop for drive recovery.

Know that I have not used the program, nor the company, and of course do not endorse them - however, this program would seem to be your fix. As I cannot speak to the reliability of that particular program, I can only say to be careful and hopefully you can recover everything you need.

Install a partition manager program like
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
open it and you will see the entire hard disk. In there either create another partition in the unallocated space or add it to the D partition.

Cannot retrieve data from external hard drive 500GB. Bought in china and not used here yet. I can tell there is something on the drive as disk management shows it having 465.76 GB unallocated. However,...

If it's unallocated, that means the space wasn't turned into a drive yet.
You need to partition the space, and create a drive.

What you need to do amounts to going to Disk Management, right clicking where it says "unallocated space", and say "create basic disk". Then just repeatedly hit next.

Wont show up on my computer

Firstly, make sure that all the cables are plugged in properly for power and USB data transfer. If it still doesn't show up after a few minutes, then Right-Click on My Computer (Vista & Win7 users will see it labeled Computer), then choose Manage, then choose Storage, Then Disk Managment. It will take a few seconds for your computer to fully load in the screen. At the top it should list your hard drive or hard drive partitions if you have more than one partition. Under that you will see Disk 0, Disk 1, and so on. Do you see any of these with a long black bar to the right of it with it labeled Unallocated Space inside the box area under the black bar? If not, then there is something severely wrong with your My Book or the power or USB cables to it, or your computer's USB port is burned out, try all of your USB ports just to be sure. If you do see a long black bar that says Unallocated Space underneath it, then this is likely your My Book. Unallocated Space means that the hard drive hasn't been formatted yet, or that it's partition has somehow been deleted. If you've used this external hard drive in the past to back things up on, then your data is lost because data can't be stored or retained on a hard drive that isn't formatted or partitioned. Be sure that the area of Unallocated Space is actually your My Book. It should show how much Unallocated Space there is, and your's should be reading between 300GB - 320GB. To get your computer to recognize your hard drive you will have to partition and format it. Right-click in the white area under the black bar and choose Create Simple Volume. Follow the steps thru and format the hard drive. After its formatted it should be recognized by your computer again.

I have a freeagent go 500gb portable hard drive. Is it possible to divide it into two 250gb partitions?how?

yes it is possible. First you can use a partition software. The second is using the disk management tools, these are the steps.

1.To run Disk Management Tool, click on Start, right-click My Computer, and select Manage from the menu that appears. When you see the Computer Management window, click the Disk Management item listed underneath the Storage heading. You then see the main Disk Management pane in the right side of the Computer Management window.

2.Creating the partition: Unallocated space appears as an Unknown Partition in the Disk Management diagram, you can use it to create a new partition in some or all of the space. To create your new partition, you need to right-click on the part of the diagram that represents the unallocated space, the unallocated space has a black stripe running along the top and then choose the "New Partition" on the menu that appears. To create your new logical drive in an extended partition that has free space The free space has a light green strip along the top, right-click on the free space then choose New Logical Drive from the menu that appears. Now you will see the New Partition Wizard.

The Partition Wizard will asks you to specify the following:

1 The Type - Primary, extended, or logical partition. Your hard drive can contain up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition. Choose the primary partition if you are created a partition in which you will install an operating system (this is unusual situation). Choose extended if you plan to create several logical partitions within it. The logical partition type is available only if you choose to create the new partition in an extended partition with some free space.

2 The Size - You may use the entire available space, or leave room for more partitions. The Partition Wizard will displays the minimum and maximum size for the partition, this is based on the space where it will be stored

3 The Drive letter or path - Two operating system on your computer. You may select any unused letter, but the wizard will offer the next available drive letter. To Mount in the following empty NTFS Folder, you need an NTFS partition with a drive letter on the same machine. You may select the "Do Not Assign A Drive Letter Or Drive Path" option, this will let Windows assign a letter later, usually the default drive letter.

4 The File system - The default is NTFS (recommended), but you can use FAT32 (not recommended) as well. Both NTFS and FAT32 will efficiently utilize disk space on large drives.
Note: NTFS has better security features, the better recovery capabilities after a major crash, and has file-level compression built in. NTFS will also give you the option of enable compression.

5 The Label - Type a name for the partition, name it something that will indicating what you will use it for, data files, my files, fatboy one, etc.

I hope this solution was helpful.

Not show 80gb show 32gb

Click Start
Right-mouse click My Computer
Click Manage
Expand the Storage branch of the tree
Click Disk Management
You should see a rectangle with '32GB' in one "inner" rectangle, and '48GB' as "unallocated" storage.

Compare it to writing in only the first 32 pages of an 80 page diary.

Select the "unallocated' space.
Click to "Create Partition", so that you can use that "unallocated" space.

The only way to get that data back is by using a data recovery program. There are several different types of data recovery software out there. I've found one for you. Click here to go to the website. I haven't actually used this company's recovery software, so I don't guarantee or endorse them, so you may want to shop around before buying one.
