Bought a brand new sealed R64R because its RF or IR and I need to set it up as a 2nd remote. I have a HDMI cable running to my kitchen and I'm using the old R34 remote to channel select in kitchen. Bought R64R as a backup for family room (next room) so I don't have to share one remote. I want to leave one in each room.

OK... I've been digging all day and I finally found the solution if you need to have more than one RF remotes working one receiver per my setup. IOW, the HR20 feeding two (2) displays; one with the component cables to my main family room display, and the 50' HDMI cable (24 gauge) driving the small LCD in my kitchen. Granted, you must watch the same program in both rooms, but that's fine because the TV is hung on the wall and the cables (TV & 110v) exit thru plates alongside the mount. So with an RF remote, I can change the channels and such from 35'+ away. So it works and here's the codes:
1. Locate the 12 digit Receiver ID (RID) number of your
DIRECTV Receiver. You can find the RID number on
the back panel of your receiver, or inside the CAM
access door next to the reset button.
2. Write down the last six digits of the RID number.
3. Slide the mode switch to DIRECTV, AV1, or AV2.
4. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the
green light under the selected switch flashes twice and
release both keys.
5. Using the number keys, enter 9 6 1. (The green light
flashes twice.)
6. Press and release CHAN. (The green light flashes
twice.)
7. Using the NUMBER keys, enter the last six digits of the
RID number. (See step 2 above.)
8. Press and release the SELECT key. (The green light
flashes twice.)
Hope this helps someone else down the road. Remember, if you want to drive two displays with HD content, you MUST use the COMPONENT and HDMI outputs... the 75Ohm amazingly does not carry decoded HD signals out from the Direct TV receiver.
I followed the on screen directions and the steps posted by drgrafix on Dec 14, 2008, which are the same, and I still can't get my RC64R to accept the RF feature.
I am only trying to control one HDTV set.
The IR set up works fine.
