Rinnai RHFE 1001FA

I have an old Rinnai he I have been living with a 1001fa-1 for 4 years and every winter the unit stops working. When activated it clicks a few times and then nothing! I have had to call out repair men every time and it seems to work after what appears to be a filter cleaning. It stopped again today and I have had no luck getting help online or through a service. Where can one find a troubleshooting manual?

I am not sure if this is the proper way to post clarification or not but here goes. The heater did run but only for a moment (less than one minute). The exhaust port on the outside of the building seems very small and is prone to ice buildup which chokes the heater. I found a manual for a simial model of heater which stated that the heater will cut out for ventilation blockages. I am assuming that is what was happening. I have been working around this by constantly clearing ice from the vent (probably installed with a poor angle on the exhaust pipe!) and taking the front coved off of the unit. This seemed to allow the unit some air and it began to work every time it was activated! This method defeats the filters though and should not be the long term fix. I did clean the filters throughly before resorting to the cover removal but the unit kept turning off. I am not sure how to keep this thing running without this constant supervision.

    Joe,

Does the heater run for a while before it quits? If so, how long will it run? Have you ever tried to clean the filters?

Joe,

If you are having trouble with the flue icing up on the air side, just remove the flex air hose from the back of the unit. It will now **** room air. When the weather conditions change you can hook the hose back up. As you can see the flue doesn't give much space for the air. As far as the front cover, I think you need to clean the circulating fan blowers as well as the screens.

Good luck,

Sounds like a bad gas solenoid. They are not cheap to replace because there are three of them. I would check into replacing it.

Hi,

I often get customers calling about the same issue. I have found that the units have three gas solenoids that tend to heat up and close randomly. I usually chang out all three. Takes about an hour and parts run about $150. If that does not work, you are probably looking at replacing the PC board. The 1001FA/VA models you can still get parts for, the 1001FA-2 models not so.

In Vermont I can get 200-400 for this unit. Make sure you include the vent kit that came with it. The new will not fit the old one anyway.

Can you replace the slider thermostat in this unit with a digital stat? Or Can an wall stat be used? Model: RHFE 1001FA/VA-2

The model you have does not have a conventional thermostat but a temperature probe located at the right hand side bottem in the back. The slider acts like a dimmer switch and communicates with the computer board to cycle on or off.

I can suggest a around-about solution. I also have the same model installed around the same time. I have the outlet that it is connected to controlled by an electric heat thermostat on a wall at the oposite side of the room. I keep the heater on high at all times and the thermostat controls the electricity to the outlet. It's worked great for the 13 years it's been installed.
