I have a similar spec imac and have discovered that the cd player has stopped working but the dvd is fine. I've tried numerous discs to no avail. It's outside of warranty and will cost 200 uk pounds. Not happy. I wanted to install xp on boot camp and am now unable. I'm not sure an external cd player will be visible for the installation.

Can anyone advise? If this is a common problem surely Apple should acknowledge this an offer a free repair.

When rebooting press and hold the Alt key until it displays all bootable drives. Now insert your disk. If it works install Leopard from here. If not then your drive is dead or faulty and needs checking or replacing.

All the best

How to force spit CD from drive

A few ways of doing this

1) restart mac and press down the mouse button after you hear the startup noise

2) if that does not work try opening up disk utility and click on the icon of your disk under the left hand column then go up to eject button and click eject

3) or open up terminal found in the utilities folder within your applications folder and then type in
drutil tray eject and then press return

4) Finally what to do is try pick up your imac tilt the
imac to the one side and press the eject key and hopefully the effect of gravity will allow the CD to fall out.

However, I would say that DVD drives in all macs are a bit suspect and if
your macbook is still under warranty or under AppleCare take it back to the Apple Store and tell them that the DVD drive is faulty and they will replace it free off charge.

If it is out of warranty there is one other way to do it which I have used recently but IT CAN BREAK THE DVD DRIVE (Use it at your own risk), so only use it as a last resort. Get a thin piece of plastic (or credit card) and put a piece of double sided tape on it then with the macbook switched off insert the piece of plastic with the tape facing down in relation to the keyboard. Put it in about half an inch and you may be able to drag the DVD out.

Hope this helps.

Imac intel dual core dvd drive will not mountunable to load a cd or dvd it keep ejecting them. I have tried to boot with the OSX CD, but still it eject it out. I notice the problem when I tried to...

Installing Parallels should not change the way your optical drive works.

Try resetting the SMC as per the following article:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

If that doesn't work, try resetting the PRAM:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

If these do not resolve the issue you will likely need repair.

I want to eject cd from cd rom apple system imac

To eject a CD/DVD that is not recognized by your computer, boot up while holding down the eject button on your keyboard, and continue to hold down eject until the disk ejects.

If this does not work, hold down your mouse button while booting up in the same way.

If neither of these work, open Terminal and type in the following:

drutil tray eject

If your disc does still not eject, your optical drive likely needs repair.

Eject does not open

Most hard-drives do *NOT* have an EJECT button.
Most diskette-drives *DO* have an EJECT buttton.
Most CD/DVD-drives *DO* have an EJECT button.

Turn your computer off. Straighten one end of a Norwegian paper-clip, and insert it into the small hole in the front-plate of the CD/DVD drive, until you feel "resistance". Then, push it another 1/4 inch, and the drive-tray should "unlock" and open slightly. Then, gently pull the tray fully-open. Remove any CD/DVD media. Then, replace the CD/DVD drive.

CD/DVD Drive Doesn't work

Hi, Sorry to hear you are having problems,
One final test to try before declaring the drive dead:
Insert a bootable installation CD or DVD and restart right away. If the system ejects the disk, simply re-insert it as soon as possible after you hear the start up sound and then, immediately press the ( C ) button on your keyboard forcing the Mac to boot from the cd....
If your Mac boots, then the drive is OK it's your system that has a problem.
If the disk is ejected again, then you can declare the drive dead. It is a relatively inexpensive repair and if your Mac is still under warranty, then apple will take care of this no charge.
Good luck

Disk Drive spits out brand new DVD+R DL cds

The drive in the G5 may not support DL discs. Open the system profiler (From the apple menu, select 'About This Mac' then select 'More Info'). Click on 'Disc Burning' in the left hand column. You will now get the details about the disc drive including which discs are supported.
