Hi Chrissy...
It is rare for a newer self-defrost refrigerator to develop a leak. Refrigerators are "hermetically sealed" and the freon can last for years.
To answer your original question, we use "sniffers" to look for leaks, but we also use our eyes and senses to tell if the system is fully charged. We look at the evaoporator coil and check for a nice, even thin layer of frost (less than 1/8") covering the whole coil.
You cannot smell a freon leak, however you can smell compressor oil and acids that escape, and often you can see the presence of oily residue where a leak may be.
As techs, we find the first thing a do-it-yourself-er will (especially husbands engineers and home handymen) say when a fridge stops cooling is "It's low on freon".
They almost never are low however, This "diagnosis" comes from automotive air conditioners, which have a belt-driven compressor, and yes, freon can leak out of them thru the seals on the compressor. So oftentimes people will think "my car's AC stopped cooling and needed freon, so the same thing must be wrong with my fridge!"
Nope. Not very likely.

Brand new, running 20 hours, inside temp of both fridge and freezer remains 74f

If you can actually hear the refrigerator running but it never got cold in 20 hrs you have a serious cooling system problem. Either a blockage in the cooling system or it has a leak in the tubing and the freon leaked out. In either case if it is BRAND NEW, I suggest an exchange.

If you get too much in there, it'll stop freezing, too. Trust the gauges - they'll tell you everything about how much Freon your system should have.

Let the refrigerator stabilize after adding any Freon - it takes a little while to stabilize temperature. Also watch for signs that the defrost timer isn't working right.

Why is my Samsung french door/freezer not working

It is very rare to have a freon leak. It is possible but there are there are things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold. Is the compressor running. Are the fans running. Is the freezer or refrigerator coils blocked with ice. Usually freon is the last place i look.

Fridge and freezer both stopped working.Lights still on.

check lines for leaks, check all components. If the compressors kicks on then check lines if the compressor doesn't then that's a potential problem as well. If everything; lines, compressor and expansion canister are looking good then your out of freon, it is the gas that is used to transfer heat from the compartments to outside. Having no freon further tells you that you have a leak, since freon is expensive depending on how much your appliance requires, its best to check everything first before you start removing parts from the appliance

How do mi check the freon

Refrigerators don't need freon added to them unless there is a leak and until you find and repair the leak you have not fixed the problem.

A lot of people think when their refrigerator is not cooling that they need to add freon. This is not normally the case 99% of the time. You are a lot more likely to have a defrost problem or a fan problem if your refrigerator is not cooling.

If you actually do need freon, call a reputable professional. There are a lot of guys out there that will just add freon because you told them it needed it, charge the heck out of you and then leave. Be careful about telling some jack leg that you need freon.

Odor can it be freon leak?

Two possible causes of odor on fridges:

* Freon Leak
* Defrost Drain Pan dirty.

If the fridge was unplugged for a while or there was a liquid dropped in the refrigerator, it's more likely to be the drain pan. It is located at the back of the appliance, above the compressor.

If it is clean and the smell is not coming from there, then you may suspect about the freon leak.

How can you tell if your coolant has leaked out of your refrigerator?

Freon is a clear gas while at room tempertaure.
You would not see it.
Freon leakage is normally one of the last things to go wrong with a fridge.
You may want a second opinion.

Condensation and water in refrigerator

It sounds like you need someone who knows what they are doing out to your house. A tech should find and repair or replace the component that leaks. A second trip should be not be needed. The fact you have mold tells me they have never properly did your repair. Mold will grow only when the cavity gets above 40 degrees for a sustained period of time. use or call 800-222-7820 and explain the situation and get another company to fix it right.
