Hi Joe, thanks for the help.

After I did all you advised, It still had my "belkin54g" network name AND my new name network.

I turned off my computer and then the "belkin" network disappeared - (the new network remained) is this usual ???

1 final question - when i connected to the new wireless network it didnt ask me for a password but when i look on "view wireless networks" it says that my network is "security enabled wireless network (WPA2) Why is it not asking me for a password ? (am i really protected?)

Open a browser page and log into the setup page @ 192.168.2.1,
click on SSID on the left column under Wireless,. It will probably ask you for a password if you had put one in. If not leave it clear and click "submit".
Then you can change the SSID (router name" to what you want it to be.
Then click on security, choose the type on encryption you want ie: WEP. WPA. Then put in the key you want to use to secure the router. Make sure you click apply after each change.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Yes , the Belkin wireless was probably "cached" in the queue.

If it was the firs time you accessed the network with your new name and key, it should have asked you for the key. But if you used the same name and key you had been using, then it would have logged on automatically.

How do I put security on my Belkin 54g router

You set your security by enabling WEP.

When you get in the interface to configure WEP, set a pass phrase. Write down the 3 numeric keys it generates. Then connect to the wireless using your laptop, etc. When it asks for your passkey, do not enter the pass-phrase; enter one of the three keys that were generated by the router. That's the biggest mistake people make when trying to get wireless to work.

Belkin 54g Wireless connection problem.

This is more of an explanation then a solution, but to best explain what to do I have to first explain why this is happening. When you add security to a wireless router or ap you add extra envelopes to the packets of info being transferred, adding encryption to that makes it much slower because the ap has to encode all packets coming to you and un-encode all packets being sent to the Internet. In our time this happens very quickly, but in computer time I just described a lifetime. In addition if your signal is not 100% you might have packet loss "more slow down". Now the answer, in your ap setup pages you can setup wireless security, set this to Mac address authenication and add the mac addresses of all the network cards that have access to this ap. This is by far the fastest methiod of secure data transfer.

Hope this was some help...

A 2nd pc connected to my belkin 54g wirless rouer now mine cannot

Of course you've clicked "refresh" wireless network list? Go to the working computer and in a DOS box type IPCONFIG /ALL to find the gateway address for the router. ( Or refer to your wireless connection utility ). I will probably be 192.168.0.1 for example. In your browser address line put HTTP://192.168.0.1 and click the arrow. You should be talking to the router now, default id and/or password is typically ADMIN. Go to wireless settings and make sure SSID broadcast is turned on. Also note the SSID name, encryption type ( WEP, WPA, etc ) and note the key, if any. You now have enough information to connect the second computer. Yeah, this is complicated. If it's more than you want to know best get a friend to help you, though I may be able to answer specific questions once you get into it.
