Blender loud/smokes. Lost part?

When my sister came in to town to visit, she washed the blender jar in the dishwasher. Now, when I use it, it is much much louder than usual and the base begins smoking. My guess is that while in the dishwasher, some part that I've never noticed (maybe where the jar connects with the base)got lost? I assume if I need to replace a part, I need to get into contact with the manufacturer. If anybody has any idea as to what's going on or how I can get in contact with the manufacturer, please please let me know! Thanks :)

How do you mount up a blender?

The rubber ring goes between the jar and the blade assy housing. It never goes under the blade assy, always to the jar.

I have the blender and I'm not sure if I want to put it in the dishwasher. Is it dishwasher safe? If not, how do you appropriately clean it? It doesn't come apart easily. I just need to know how to clean...

We put the top part of aur bleander through the dishwasher all the time... no problems....just take it off of the base and unscrew the chopper from the jar...throw the little parts in the utensil cup and you are good to go...

There is a leak in the caraffe(or jar). It is at

Common issue with all of these carafe's. Once the jar starts to leak the bearings are shot and it is time to replace the jar. The bearings are non-replacable. Bad design in my opinion. I was able to get my last jar (I have been through 3 before the 5 year warranty went out) to last by hand washing and not putting it in the dishwasher, but after 4 years of use on this jar it failed too.

Unit began smoking and smelled hot

If this was a recent purchase for which you have a receipt, return it to the store immediately while you still can. If it is beyond the store's return policy, but purchased less than one year ago (most times you will still need a receipt), call Black and Decker to get in-warranty service/replacement.

In fact, call Black and Decker anyways - if the BL5000 was manufactured between Dec.2003 and Jan.2005 (highly possible if it was marked on clearance), the blade assemblies were recalled. here is the recall notice:

If it is out of warranty, let the blender cool for an hour. Then remove the blender jar, plug in the base, and see if it will spin with nothing attached to it. See if it smokes if left on for 1 full minute - don't let it run longer than one minute.

If it doesn't smoke, let it cool for an additional 20 minutes. Then remove and then reassemble the blade assembly, gasket, etc., collar, jar, etc. Try blending. If it smokes while blending, order a new blade assembly and gasket (usually they come packaged together - around $20 or so). Once the new blade assembly/gasket arrives, try blending again. If it doesn't smoke, you're probably good to go. If it does smoke, you have a more serious issue.

All of this is going to take time and money if it is out-of-warranty. If you have deemed that the blender is worth more than $50 for a new one, let me know.
