Question about GE Advantium SCA1001SS Convection / Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE Advantium SCA2000BAA

My oven has started to "click" repeatedly when it is connected to the electrical outlet - whether it is on or not, whether the door is open or closed. Clicking comes from behind the small grill area inside the oven where the light is - looks like a panel is stuck? Only way to stop the clicking is to disconnect from the wall or throw the power switch - any idea of problem and if I could safely repair? Thank you!

I've tried to upload some film on youtube so you can visualize the problem, seems like the curved half panel that sometimes covers over the light bulb is stuck. I sure do appreciate your assistance and if you'd like more specific pictures, just let me know, thank you!

I have the same problem with the clicking, I ordered and rreplaced the switch and it still clicking. How do you solve a sticking damper door?

    Thanks

What do you mean when you say it looks like a panel is stuck?

Can you upload a clear photo of the area?

Or link to a video a video?

This is usually caused by a bad connection on the control board or relay board, but it may also be a failing thermistor or temperature sensor.

Excellent camera work! This is very helpful.

That door you mention is part of the "damper assembly".

In that damper assembly is a damper switch which detects the position of the damper door.

If the switch goes bad, or there's some kind of obstruction of the damper door, the control board will try to run the damper motor to close or open the door, as appropriate, depending on whether you're cooking in microwave mode or speedcook / convection mode.

It's not listed as a separate part, but that damper switch should be the same kind as the upper and lower door switches to the left of the control panel.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes. Maybe you saw that already?

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Our Advantium 120 oven (model # SCA1001KSS 02, Manufactured June 2008)is not working. Began w/ time not coming on when cooking and just a little green microwave light shows while cooking.

Typical of a control microchip failure caused by a power surge. With a microwave as old as yours, it is safest to simply replace the entire oven rather than attempt to fix it, as older magnetrons are likely to fail.

  • Select the "Options" menu and adjust the clock display settings if the display is blank. Set the clock if the oven won't start. The clock must be set for the oven to work properly, as oven programming is dependent on the clock.
  • Close the door tightly if the oven won't start. The oven won't start if the door isn't closed. You can identify from the lights whether the oven failing to start is related to the door or to the power supply. If the control panel is illuminated and interior lights are on when you open the oven door, you can be sure the oven is receiving power and any starting problems are due to the door not being closed tightly.
  • Press and hold the "Clear/Off" button if the oven performs strangely. Be sure to hold it for a few seconds. This will reset the GE Advantium.
But as you mentioned that there is /was a loud noise this is a indication of the unit make any usual noise (groaning, gurgling, etc.?) or was / is it either louder or quieter than normal? It may be as simple as the top door switch or its mount or it may be a bad magnetron or shorted diode.

Common problem with the Advantium. Culprit is a thermal cut off (TCO) for the cavity. Other posts detail where it is. I ordered a replacement at the link below.
