Swingline Stapler Staples Only After You Open It Up....

I have a swingling heavy duty stapler and it does staple but only after you open up the top of it [as if to put more staples in it]. I think there is a problem with the spring but i am not sure how to fix it. And I have the right staples for it, heavy duty ones that have the model of the stapler on the box.
The Model #: 77701/15
Thanks, Sarah

I have the same problem! The only way to make it staple again is to bang the head of the stapler on a hard surface. It then puts the staples back in the right spot to be able to be stapled again.

I think it provides tension to lift up that part of the stapler that houses the staplers.

  • Anonymous Mar 18, 2014

The spring fell out and now the stapler handle does not lift stapler head

  • Anonymous Mar 20, 2014

How do you open up the stapler

I need staples for the 10060 model.

When you lift up the top of the stapler (as though you are going to put staples in), does the pusher slide freely back and forth? It might be getting stuck at some point and not pushing the staples (either due to a worn pusher spring, or friction). First (after removing the staples) try spraying some light oil on the mechanism and lifting the top part of the stapler up and down a few times and observe how easily it moves back and forth. Also, with the top open try GENTLY sliding back and forth a little - if it slides fine with no sticking, try loading staples and using stapler. If it slides ok, but doesn't quickly return to it's "normal position" when pulled so as to put tension on the spring, rhen the spring may be worn and need replacing.

Also, here's some directions from Swingline about clearing jams from manual heavy duty staplers:

My heavy duty Manual stapler is jammed how do I clear it?

    Question
My heavy duty Manual stapler is jammed how do I clear it?

    Answer
When you jam staplers in your Heavy Duty Manual Stapler, such as the 90002, 39002 or 39005, you can remove the staple jams by using the following steps.

    1. Remove the follow block at the back of the stapler, by pushing the follow block in, lift the follow block up slightly and slide the follow block out of the stapler.

    2. Remove any staples which are on the internal staple rail. They should slide out of the back of the stapler.

    3. On the front of the stapler there should be a plastic covered tab. This tab is on the Front Face Plate. Hold the handle up, and push down on the tab with the side of your thumb. The Face Plate should move down and release. Once the front face plate is released you can open the Front Face Plate out at a 25-30 degree angle. Check the inside of the Front Face Plate for any damaged or broken pieces of staples. Remove any damaged staples that are found. ( If you have numerous staples jammed in the Front Face Plate, remove as many of the staples as possible with a needle nose pliers first. This will make opening the Front Face Plate much easier.)

    4. While the Face Plate is opened, place your Follow Block back into the stapler, you want to see the end of the Follow Block come out through the front of the stapler. If you do not see the Follow Block come out of the stapler it means that you have staples jammed inside the stapler on the rail. Proceed to step 5

    5. Remove the Follow Block out of the stapler. To view the staples jammed on the rail, look down the inner rail from the back. The staples will generally be going across the top of the rail. You will have to look closely to see these staples. Once you have located the staples, insert a long thin bladed screw driver through the staple rail, once you are under the staples, lift the blade of the screw driver up underneath the staples and slide the staples backwards out of the stapler. After you have removed all of the staples, try to slide your Follow Block back into the stapler, and again you want to see the end of the Follow Block come out of the front of the stapler.

6.You will now need to close the Front Face Plate by following these steps:
    * Pressing the face plate back in towards the stapler.
    * Hold inward pressure on the Front Face Plate.
    * Lift the Front Face Plate up until the Face Plate locks back into position.
    * DO NOT TRY TO STAPLE UNTIL THE FRONT FACE PLATE IS LOCKED BACK
INTO POSITION AS LEAVING THE FRONT

I have a 77701/15 model swingline with the same problem. It was the as kosmikkurt had described: the pusher was not sliding smoothly. I spent so much time adjusting the "bend" in the pusher that i didn't realize it was the channel slot that had the problem. Basically, my pusher was sliding out of the grooves because the slot got "widened" somehow. All i did was use a pair of pliers to squeeze the wider section so that the channel was parallel and now the pusher stays within the grooves. Simple as that.

There are several brands of staples that will fit your stapler and the price will vary according to the depth of staple you are looking to buy. Arrow brand staples are the most common. All the ones I saw that fit the 9700 are Wide Crown Swingline Heavy Duty

How do I replace the staples in Stanley Bostitch B310HDS? I cannot seem to figure out how to open it.

"The staples load from the rear of the stapler. At the back end of the is a piece of black plastic that extends beyond the end of the stapler. This device holds the staples inside the stapler. To open the area where the staples are placed, push this extended button and lift up on it. The spring device that holds the staples inside the stapler will then slide out. Place a new strip of staples inside the stapler on top of the two metal guide rails. Then insert the spring device to lock the staples in place. The stapler is now loaded and ready to work. " hope this helps you out

My Swingline Optima Power Ease will not staple, nor can I open it to try to find out why. There are staples in there, but it feels like there are no springs

This happened to me as well. I am not sure what causes this but heres what I did to fix it.

Just grab the top part of the stapler ( where it says Swingline) and pull up, like you are trying to seperate the top and bottom. You will hear a click and your stapler should work fine.

Instructions on unjamming swingline electric stapler model 270; jam is at the front of the stapler; staplers come out either broken, flaten or crooked and does not secure document.

First, are you using the recommended staples for this stapler? Many heavy duty electric staplers don't use "standard" desk staples. Second, try unplugging the stapler, unloading the staples, and if possible, reach a couple of fingers into the stapler and try manually pushing up on the staple head to see if you can get the driver blade to come down. Does it come down smoothly, or does it seem like there is something stuck in there? If you aren't sure about disassembling the unit (my usual method-but I'd recommend having the parts diagram handy), try using a flashlight to look at the underside of the staple head, where the staples come out - can you see anything stuck in there? If so, you might be able to use a small knife blade or small dental pick to get jammed staple pieces out.
