Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

I get an error when trying to draw the graph of any fuction. It a dimenssion error

You're probably trying to graph a function that does not involve stat plot features. You can correct this by turning off the stat plot features. Press "2ND" "STAT PLOT" and then select 4:PlotsOff.

Press the Menu key. Use arrows to highlight the Graph utility. The function input screen opens so that you can type in the function

Y1=-X^2+5X-3You can play with the line style, or other features.

1. To graph a function, Press [Y=] to enter the function editor.

2. Type in a legitimate function.

3. Press ENTER to validate the function.

4. Press the GRAPH key to draw the graph.

Try your settings by drawing the function y= x

If you have problem with Invalid Dimension or other errors, turn the

Statistical Plots OFF.

The argument error must have something to do with the parametric functions you are drawing. I do not think anybody would know where to look unless you give us the functions.

As to the range of the T-variable, you can set it by pressing [SHIFT][F3] to open the (V-Window) configuration screen. It starts showing Xmin, Xmax. etc. To get to the T range, use down arrow (about 7 times).

This should help you setup your calculator to do graphing.

1. Prepare calculator for graphing Turn StatPlotsOff to avoid errors:

**Func**is highlighted. If you are drawing PARametric plots, POLar plots or SEQuence plots, you highlight the relevant item in the list - If it is not, use arrow to highlight Func and press [ENTER] to validate.
- Do not worry if you do not have exactly the same screen
as in the screen picture (We may have different OS Versions)

- Do not select the bubble on line 6: It is for
animations. It will not leave a trace at the end of the plot.

5. Drawing the Graphs

- Press [GRAPH] to see the graphs.
- If one of them is missing, verify that its = is still highlighted, then use the [WINDOW] to set the Window dimensions,

A. This is due to a mathematical error such as

- dividing by 0,
- an illogical operation,
- calculations outside the range of a function,
- using the exponential function with the [^] key,
- logarithm of a negative number,
- calculating the factorial of numbers larger that 69,
- what have you.
- Check the expression of the function you are trying to graph.

- Use keys to highlight [GRAPH] and press [EXE].
- Make sure the screen that opens says Graph Func Y= at the top.
- On the Y1= line enter X (use the [X,theta,T] key under the [ALPHA] key.
- Press [F6:Draw].
- You should see a staright line passing through the origin (0,0).

You must deactivate the statistical plots. If you do statistical graphs, the graphing is reconfigured in a way that happens to be incompatible with regular fuction graphs.

- To deactivate the statistical plots.
- Press [2nd][Y=] to access the (STAT PLOT) menu.
- Press [4:PlotsOff][ENTER].
- Calculator displays Done.
- You are ready to draw the function graphs.

Hello,

In parametric mode you are not drawing one function, but two functions X1(T) and Y1(T). If you use the DrawInv( command either on X1(T) or Y1(T) you get a syntax error.

However if you are drawing functions in Funct mode you can draw the inverse of the function that has been graphed.

Here is how you do it.

[2nd][Draw][8: DrawInv] [ENTER]

The command appears on the home screen, and you need to tell it the function it will act on. To do so press

[VARS] --> Y-Vars [1:Function]

and select the function you want, say Y1, if Y1 has already been defined.

DrawInv Y1 [ENTER]

Both Y1 and its inverse will be drawn.

Let us start wih the derivatives. To obtain the values of derivatives at points on a graph, you must set** Derivative to ON**

Press [AC/On] to trun calculator on. If you do not see the icons press [MENU], with arrows select [RUN] and press[EXE] . The screen clears.

Press [SHIFT][SETUP ] . The first few options must be set as follows

Mode : : Comp

Function Type : Y=

Draw Type : PLot

**Derivative : ON This is the one to make derivatives visible**

Angle : Rad unles you have to use degrees.

Coord : on if you want the x,y coordinates to be displayed

Grid : Off

Axes : ON to display x and y axes

Press [EXE] to save options. You are taken to [Run] screen.

Press [Menu] Play with arrows to select [GRAPH] and press [EXE]

You see a list Y1=, Y2= and so on

On the line Y1=, enter [SIN] [X,Theta, T] .

If function is complicated you may have to enter parentheses sin(X). When you finish to enter the functions you want to draw, hit [F6:Draw]

The graphs are displayed.

Press [F1:Trace] The trace function allows you to move cursor along the curve, while it displays the coordinates of the cursor. And since you set Derivative to ON, the trace displays also the value of the derivative of the curve at the position of the cursor.

There are other intersting tools, under [Sketch] and [G-solve ] such as minimum, maximum, tangente, inverse of the function drawn, integral under the curve, intercepts with the coordinates axes, etc. I will not spoil your fun by giving you the plot of the movie.
