Convergence problem with projection TV

I have an Akai Model PT 4799 HD television that seems to have a convergence problem.  The "No Signal" screen is "ghosting" red and I cannot get it into focus.  Any idea what I can do to fix this?

Would this problem require a TV Technician? If so, where is the closest certified repair shop or dealer? I am located in central Kentucky about 20 minutes East of Lexington.

As explained you need a technician to fix the problem.

If the unit is under warranty you need to contact akai, and they only deal by email, see website here : Thank You for contacting the akai Customer Care Website.

If warranty is expired (one year) then repair at the nearest akai authorized repairer, in Lexington try Bobby Jones & Son TV. at (859) 246-0107 .

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the ghosting effect and the no focus both indicates a convergence issue. While technically this requires the replacement of only 2 ICS, a couple of resistors and possibly pico fuses, it is a challenging DIY (do-it-yourself) repair if not familiar with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVD and a soldering iron. As the others have posted, perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Additionally, the final alignment after the repairs wouold be very exacting better left off to experienced hands.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

As you said its the convergence proble,so there is a convergence stk ic on the main board of the tv which mostly goes faulty and needs replacement to make it proper.as to replace it you will need a technician at your place to replace that ic from the main board.a local tv repair technician is much advisable as certified technician can charge more srervice charge for this job.
it will get repaired.as i would suggest worth repaing it.

Hello rabbit7971

This is a failure of the convergence amp's - not a job for self-repair. normal repair for PTV sets with this problem should run $250-$350. Call a local repairman for repair don't go through the manufacturer, their $300 ISC alignment service is a total crock, 99% of sets cannot be set to anything close to a "PRO" standard - you will not see the change anyway & first time you move the tint or contrast the setting is lost anyway.

BTW do NOT move the crt lens assembly at all, if you have a 1 hour job just turned into several hours of alignment for the tech -at your expense

good luck and let me know if you have any more questions

If you have no idea or experience servicing tv. it is better to contact a repairman to do the work for you..

it's too dangerous for someone who is not familiar repairing the unit.,

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Problem with HD feed from satellite receiver

I just had my HD DTV installed this weekend, you have to leave it on 480p. I too purchased my tv in 2002. Per DTV, its an older model and you have to stay with the 480p to get the best possible picture. I have to admit, don't know what the 1080i looks like, but 480p is showing me a very good picture. Best I have ever seen on my TV.

Yes, you have a size problem you have horizontal and vertical size. Either its' in the service mode or somewhere on the set, with this set it's probably in menu. Must be set too high. I will look for menu codes! Is this an Akai or Panasonic set?
