Question about Intel DG965RY Motherboard

DG965RY boot problem

Thank you "The only-sol" for going through my problem.
Well, my Mobo is Intel DG965RY which has 4 DIMM slots, two of which are Slot A and other two are slot B. So my mobo does support more than 3 DDR2. Intel recommends to fill up both channels (0 and 1) of Slot A first and then go for slot B. I have 3 nos. of 512MB DDR2. So I fill up both channels of Slot A and then installed one 512MB DDR2 in Slot B channel 0. All DDR2 RAM are of same spec. However, during cold boot, if I press the start button immediately after POST procedure, there is beep sounds indicating some kind of error and there is no display. However if I allow some 10 seconds after POST, then the computer boots.
The other problem is I can not restart my computer. It simply whizzes and buzzes with CPU fan running at top speed but it simply does not reboot even though there seem to be lots of processing going on.
Really strange problem. Maybe designer of this Mobo can throw some light on it. Thanks in advance.

Hi niraj73
1. Remove the 1 Ram module from Slot B Channel 0.
2. See if problem is still there.
3. If not get another Ram module of same spec to fill up all 4 channels.
4 If error still there swap the removed Ram module with one of the Ram modules still installed. One of them might be faulty.

Hello here is the homepage:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X58%20Extreme6/?cat=Manual

I think you have a ram problem:

1. Please install the memory module into the white slot (DDR3_A1,
DDR3_B1 or DDR3_C1) for the first priority.
2. Due to Intel CPU spec definition, the system will not boot if only
one DIMM is installed into DDR3_A2, DDR3_B2 or DDR3_C2 slot.
3. Due to Intel CPU spec definition, XMP DIMMs and DDR3 2000/
1866/1600 are supported for one DIMM per channel only.
4. You may install varying memory sizes in Channel A, Channel B and
Channel C. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized
channel for the dual-channel or triple-channel configuration. Any
excess memory from the higher-sized channel is then mapped for
single-channel operation.
5. It is not allowed to install a DDR or DDR2 memory module into
DDR3 slot; otherwise, this motherboard and DIMM may be
damaged.

Try only with one module, in the white slot.

Hope this will help you.

Asrock g31 m motherboard will only post if only one ram slot occupied , will not post if both slots are used , identical matched pair of ram ddr 667 800 mhz crucial ballistix both tested in another ri

I did some research. You didn't say what density the RAM was, but everything I can find on the Ballistix 800 MHZ DDR2 states that it runs at 2.2V. The standard for DDR2 RAM is 1.8V. You motherboard has both and AUTO and manual setting capability for memory (DRAM) voltage. It is possible that the AUTOP feature is not detecting the need for 2.2V, and that with only one DIMM installled, the memory marginally functions, but with the extra loading of the second it will not. Boot the system with the single DIMM, go to the BIOS, and set the DRAM voltage manually to the 2.01V setting (Verify by the part number of the RAM with the CRUCIAL website that is uses 2.2V before doing this). Once you have changed the voltage in BIOS, shut down and add the second DIMM and see if things improve.

Hi,

Here is the Intel page that has all kinds of links for this board:

DG965RY Support

Look for the on ethat says Board Component Diagram.

Thanks for using Fixya.

PS. You might want to save that page to your favorites.

Also keep in mind if you go to the Intel home page, there is a link that will detect and update all your drivers automatically.

It shouldn't matter what order you remove and replace the RAM cards in. The instructions are saying to populate Slot 1, Slot 2, and then other slots in order; don't skip any slots, in other words.

Fail to boot

When you say boot do you mean POST?

Is it turning on at all?

What happens exactly when you press the power button?

Any beeps?

Open the case and remove everything except 1 RAM chip, the cpu, the cpu cooler. Hook up the monitor to the onboard graphics and try to boot again.

If it POSTs then you know that you have a problem with one of the pieces of hardware you removed, replace them 1 at a time until it fails to POST then you know which piece is defective.

If it still doesn't POST with everything removed, try a different RAM chip, if it still fails POST then you need to replace the motherboard.

Check the clamp of the cooling fan. If the clamp is not engaged, heat sink didn't take the heat away from the micro processor causing CPU over heating.

Run with only two RAMS each in one of the DIMM slots. Three RAMS may not work unless supported by mobo or being exactly identical in their specs..
