DVD drive not recognizing disc

I always need to reboot my system with the disc left inside in order for the disc to be recognized. I remember, it started when i left a disc inside the CD-Rom for a week. Mine is a Presario F700.

I also have a Presario F700, and I can no longer get the DVD drive to open at all. I tried pushing the button, I tried clicking eject, and there's a DVD in there, and it won't read it....

I recommend reinstalling Vista, and replacing the Hard Drive as well. The errors being sporadic could be indicative of a hardware failure or a software failure and could be both in tandem.

Smart failure.. bootmgr is missing..I have recovery discs but dvd player is not working

Yes, you can make USB boot drive. However main problem is the Smart... error. It is your hard drive. You need to fix that first! Try reseating the drive. Next go into BIOS by pressing F key during boot. Might be F2? Make sure BIOS recognizes the hard drive.

Once you get the drive going again, you can start the install / repair again. USB drive tool.

Cd/dvd burner

Turn the laptop upside down and find the small screw at what would be the end of the dvd drive. Remove this screw and remove the drive. Check that the contacts are clean. Reinsert the drive and the screw.

If it still does not want to recognize the drive then there is the possibility that the drive went bad or something got corrupt in windows. Try starting the computer with a windows disc in the drive to see if it will boot from the disc. If you do not have a windows disc download a live linux version from a computer that has a working drive and burn it to disc.

Super OS choose one of the http download mirrors.

PC do not recognize DVD drive and do not show it on screen anymor

It is probably a hardware problem but I would go into the BIOS screen which it gives you instructions when your first booting up on how to do this. One inside the bios screen, which is usually blue, find a list of what hardwares are pre programmed in, maybe under drive managment. Almost all computers have different wordings. See if it listed amogst your hardware, if it is, it may be turned off some how, see if you can turn it back on.

HP dvd play on my laptop malfunctioning

grinding sounds is from the dvd drive itself. Sounds like its not sitting properly in the drive or the holder that it sits in is going bad. Either way replace the drive and that will take care of the grinding sounds. Also the more grinding sounds that happen, the more of a chance you take on your dvds getting scratches on them and going bad eventually.

I think buying a USB DVD drive is a very sensible idea as internal drives on laptops can be a pain to remove and fit and they are more prone to failure than their desktop brothers because of their flimsy construction.
